My dog's eye is swollen, red, and has pus. Why can't she open it?

This looks very painful and infected. It’s hard to tell if the eyeball itself is damaged. She needs immediate treatment so the infection can be treated and the eye itself examined. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. There is quite a bit of dry discharge around that left eye. Based on the pictures, I suspect that Willow may have an eye infection or dry eye. I would recommend having Willow examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. She may need antibiotic eye drops / ointment or dry eye medication. I would recommend that the vet stains her eye and checks to see if she has dry eye by using a Schirmer Tear Test. Poor Willow! This white pus in his eyes are a sign of an eye infection, and he has to see a vet immediately for it. The eye is such an important and delicate structure that any problem with them should be considered an emergency. Leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I would take Willow into an ER vet or find a vet on call to see him now. While there, the vet can investigate the cause of his vomiting, which can certainly be caused by eating something he shouldn't, as well as parvovirus, GI illness, or a foreign body.

This looks like a swelling of Poppy's conjunctiva as opposed to the eye itself. It could be due to an allergic reaction or infection such as conjunctivitis. She will need eye drops and antinflammatories to settle this down so go to your vet as soon as you can. In the mean time pressing a cooled tea bag on the outside of the eye can provide some relief.

Olini needs to see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for the sudden change that you see in the eye include severe conjunctivitis, corneal ulcer or abrasion, glaucoma, uveitis, and trauma. I can't quite tell from the picture, but it may be proptosed ("popped out"). If you have an emergency vet clinic open near by, this would be a case that I would advise seeking emergency care.

I'm worried about proptosis (eye has popped out of the socket) or glaucoma. Both are emergencies. I recommend that you take Princess to the emergency room. Good luck!

I consider any swelling of the eye to be an emergency. It may simply be a touch of conjunctivitis but potentially there could be damage to the cornea, or a similar more serious injury. You can soothe the eye with a cooled tea bag for immediate relief, but I would have it checked asap.
