Dog eye removal: Is it normal for her to be sensitive near the site?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lily! I would expect a dog to be much better pain wise with in 3-5 days. As for back to normal, that depends. If Lily did see some light (hard for us to ever know) it could take her weeks to months to feel normal. I had a dog once who we thought was completely blind have both eyes removed and he was depressed for months. I think he saw more than we knew. If she is comfortable, eating, etc then give her time to adjust to a complete life of darkness. I wish you the best

I would not be annoyed at your veterinarian as things can happen, but it is clear that there needs to be either a treatment change, or the surgery site may need to be reexplored to make sure all infected material was removed. Previcox is a good pain reliever, but gabapentin is much better adjunct to pain management than tramadol. The antibiotic you are using is usually adequate, but your vet may also choose to augment this with something else, like a fluoroquinolone. Under normal circumstances, an eye should not look like this 1 week post surgery. You do need to contact your vet to make them aware of Pearls' condition. It could be discomfort from the sutures. It also likely feels weird to Taurie to have her eyelid tacked down. Make sure she is wearing an Ecollar so she doesn't rub her eye and interrupt the healing.

It sounds like he needs some pain medications. I am not sure if he is already taking pain medications but you should call the vet who did the surgery to see if he/she can prescribe or adjust medications to help control the pain.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Butters. I do recommend that she sees her veterinarian again as her eye still sounds painful. Her veterinarian may prescribe an eye medication to help or even check the eye for a scratch across the surface. The sutures could have irritated her eye a bit. In the meantime, place an E-collar on her to prevent her from scratching and causing self trauma. I hope this information helps!

Hello, depending on what caused the purulent material on her eye, what you are seeing now may be consistent with scar tissue. Now, if she is having any discharge, if the normal white part of the eye (sclera) is red, or if she has bright red conjunctiva, then she should definitely be evaluated by a veterinarian. I would not recommend putting anything else into her eye until you have your veterinarian evaluate her. If she has an ulcer or an infection, putting the wrong medications in her eye may lead to a worsening condition and even the loss of her eye. I would definitely have her seen by your veterinarian if you are concerned she could be in pain or if you think her eye is not looking any better by tomorrow. Hope this helps and best of luck.

I am sorry to hear about Ellie but glad the itching has stopped! The skin around her eye looks a little red and I assume this is what you are speaking of. If her stitches were just removed in the past few days it is possible there was just some residual irritation from the sutures. We can also see inflammation around the eyes like this due to allergies. I would let your vet know about her eyelid and see if they feel a trial of an antihistamine such as diphenhydramine would be beneficial, or if they recommend a topical eye ointment on the lid to try to decrease irritation.
