My dog's eye has a red bump and clear discharge. Is it a stye?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | 2 years and 3 months old | 8 lbs

Is this a stye in my dogs eye? Yesterday he had some clear fluid draining out of his left & it still as doing it today so I flushed his eye with saline and as i was cleaning up the excess saline i noticed this red bump on the lower left corner of his eye. Could it possibly be a stye? Or something else? Thank you!

Hi, and thanks for your question.
That is likely to be due to a mild to moderate conjunctivitis, probably secondary to a trauma or infection. At this stage it is not possible to rule out that a small mass is developing (stye is possible, but a small benign tumor should be considered as well). A check up would be needed as appropriate treatment would include antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. Corneal injuries must be ruled out as well.

Hi there,

I'm concerned at the size and redness of the bump, this might be a stye or something that similar that is infected. I'd recommend taking her to her veterinarian when possible this week to have her assessed and treated. She may need eye drops or oral medications if it's a deep infection.

Hi and thanks for your request. It is very likely to be due to an impacted/obstructed meibomian gland, which could either resolve by itself or with some anti-inflammatory drops. My Boston Terrier has an eye bump. Is it a stye? What should I do?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Mahomie and for providing pictures, they are very helpful. This may be a stye. Try applying a warm compress on it for five minutes at a time a couple of times day to see if that helps it drain. If it does not help, it gets bigger, or starts to bother him, then I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps!

I'd try applying a warm compress to it five minutes a day a couple times a day to see if that helps open it up and drain. If this does not help, it gets bigger, starts bleeding or has pus, or it starts to bother her, then I would have her seen by a vet for it. I hope this helps!

My dog has eye bumps or styes. Can I treat them without a vet?

Unfortunately you cannot do much back home as the easiest way to treat them would be to try some antibiotics+antiinflammatory drops which are on prescription anyway. This treatment may help in case of inflammatory ''bumps'' and can reduce their size. In the case the bumps have a completely different nature (skin cyst or benign or malignant tumors) a completely different approach is required. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration).

What is this pink bump on my puppy's eyelid? Should I be concerned?

It may just be a stye or even an insect bite. As long as it isn't bothering him, I wouldn't be worried about it and just recommend monitoring it. A lot of times these go away on their own. However, if it is bothering him I would recommend placing an e-collar on him to prevent him from rubbing his face for now, then get him seen by your vet for medications to help it resolve. It may be a cyst or local infection/irritation. Monitor for rapid change or growth, discharge or bleeding as well as discomfort. Ideally, he can be examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the underlying cause and provide the appropriate treatment. If he is pawing or rubbing at it, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the vet.

My dog's eye has a bump, morning discharge, and is red. What's wrong?

The vast majority of eyelid masses are benign, but it sounds as though Jasper's mass is causing some irritation to his eye given the redness and discharge. It sounds as though he should be examined by his vet and will likely need to have the mass removed. If Jasper seems to be scratching at his eye or rubbing it on anything, make sure that he is wearing an e-collar (cone) to prevent injury to the eye itself. I hope that he is on the mend soon!
