My dog's eye has discharge since changing food. Is he allergic?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kali is very cute. Green or yellow eye discharge isn’t normal. I would recommend you take Kali to a vet for a thorough eye exam. She could have a scratch or an eyelid irritation causing discharge and discomfort. There could also be an allergy causing irritation or an upper respiratory infection. Once a vet sees her they can do tests to rule out a scratch and get her eye medication to help her feel better. Good luck and kisses to Kali!

This could be due to an eye injury (which could be from him scratching) or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. Dry eye can result in the discharge in the picture you posted and can require more than just Artificial Tears to treat. (That would be more common than an allergy problem especially since only one eye is affected.) It could but this could also be a sign of an eye infection. Food allergies are not the common dogs, while eye infections are much more common, so I would suspect Zeus may have an eye infection. Without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. He should see a vet today for this problem. Best of luck.

I recommend that you have them evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Poor guy! if the discharge didn't resolve with an ocular antibiotic it likely isn't a bacterial conjunctivitis. I would recommend having your Vet test for dry eye and then treat for allergies. Since he is rubbing his chin he could have allergies to his environment. He may need an eye ointment with steroids in it and be put on a systemic antihistamine. Below is a link to one you can try. I would also recommend preventing your other dog from licking the eye as he could be contributing to an infection. The foul breath could be dental disease or from the type of food you feed. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! It definitely could be related to the food change or it is environmental allergies. The fall can cause allergies for sure. If you want to rule one thing at a time out, you can either do a course of antihistamines until the first frost and see if things with the eyes and skin improve as long as they aren’t miserable and itchy or change the diet first and wait to start the medication.
