Why does my dog's eye look like a cataract has fallen to the bottom?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Spatsie! From your pictures, the affected area is either with in the anterior chamber or the corneal surface of the eye. It is not the lens so it is likely not nuclear sclerosis or a cataract. With glaucoma the eye is very red, enlarged, and painful. From your picture the sclera (white part of the eye) doens't apear red. Glaucomoa is diagnosed based on measuring the intra-ocular pressure of the eye with a tonopen or other device. My worry is that the white substance is white blood cells (hypopyon) with in the anterior chamber (which can lead to glaucoma). Corneal ulcers, corneal abscesses, uveitis, and systemic illnesses commonly cause hypopyon. The other possibility is a severe corneal ulcer. Spatsie needs to have his eye examined by a Veterinarian. It's a little difficult to tell in you picture but it looks like there is something in the anterior chamber of Lady's eye between the iris and the clear cornea - this might be inflammatory cells or the iris may be bowed forward. A cataract is an opacity on the lens behind the pupil. Lady's eye definitely looks abnormal and I would worry about her vision in that eye however - I would recommend having a vet examine the eye in person to determine what might need to happen next.

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. This could possibly be cataract but there are many other eye diseases that could cause the eyes to look like this. she is not going to die but she needs to be seen by a vet ASAP in order to diagnose the eye condition properly and then treat it so she can see well again.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a little difficult to see due to the flash, but if the area is in the eye itself, it may be the beginning of a cataract. If you are referring to the area in the corner of the eye, closes to the nose, it is normal for the skin around the eye to have a little less hair. Cataracts are very common in dogs, especially as they get older but may be a sign of an underlying health condition such as diabetes. I recommend d having Cooper seen by a vet if you believe there is something abnormal about his eye. I think you are talking about Taya’s right eye correct? That looks like it’s her 3rd eyelid which dogs and cats have but humans don’t. Many times the protruding eye lid can indicate a change in the innervation to the eye, a change in the eye pressure or sometimes a tumor in the area. I would recommend to make an appointment with the veterinarian for an exam. Make sure Kaya does not scratch or rub at the eye lid as this may cause damage and she has an important tear gland within the structure. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Cataracts in dogs can be caused by diabetes, so if the cataracts are new you should have Lulu checked for this. Otherwise, cataracts cannot be fixed with drops, but would require a surgery to the eye. Also, cloudiness in the eyes isn't always cataracts, but can be something called 'nuclear sclerosis' which causes a cloudy appearance but the animals can still see. No human drops should be applied, and no drops will help with this. There are lots of medications to treat various conditions that occur along with cataracts (uveitis, glaucoma, etc). I recommend having her seen by your vet before any medications are given. Best of luck with Lulu.
