Why is my dog licking excessively after recent tooth extraction?

This may be an indication of oral pain from the extraction. I would recommend speaking with the veterinarian about pain management and add on additional pain medications. The suture used to close the extraction site may be causing some irritation as well. I would maybe have the veterinarian take a look at the mouth to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!

Depending on which teeth and how many are removed it is not uncommon for some dogs to not be able to keep their tongue in after extractions. This can also be a nervous behavior or a sign of nausea. It is unlikely neurological if there are no other signs such as difficulty swallowing or blinking or any changes in facial symmetry

It is never normal for an adult cat to lose a tooth, and if one tooth fell out then I worry that Milo may have some advanced dental disease that needs to be addressed. Excessive licking can be a sign of pain, and losing a tooth is certainly painful! Your vet will examine Milo's mouth, and then will likely want to schedule a full dental procedure under anesthesia to address any other pathology that might be going on in the mouth. Sometimes after dental extractions they can develop a connection between the nasal and oral cavities called a fistula. This can allow oral cavity food, bacteria, saliva, etc. to enter the nose which can sometimes lead to these signs. Often times there may be nasal discharge as well. As well there are other post anesthesia problems that can occur less frequently. Since this sounds like a notable change post dental i would have it evaluated by your family vet. They can look at the extraction sites and do a thorough oral exam (sedation likely required) as well as check for normal airflow via the nose and normal airway function. If you think the sleeping a lot is new as well then this could be related or some other issue. Rechecking some bloodwork will likely be recommended as he is an older pet that underwent anesthesia. Hello. This is all VERY normal after a significant extraction of infected teeth. A little blood mixed in with saliva is causing the pink slime, & Maxi will hopefully learn to reposition her tongue, but many dogs without any more teeth will keep some of their tongue exposed. I recommend to start by having Ti-Ti examined by the veterinarian. Sometimes the extraction sites can open up and they may need to be repaired. Food sticking to area may allow more bacteria to accumulate in those areas which could lead to infection. I recommend to look into a flush for a dog's mouth. These often come with nozzles and you gently flush away the debris. This could also be done with water. Don't squirt it into the back of the throat or nose or Ti-Ti could choke. I hope this helps.

Her mouth could be very sore and be causing the licking. If this is not the cause, she could be licking due to anxiety, nausea or a compulsive disorder.
