Why is my cat licking excessively after losing a tooth? Is it pain?

There is no need to take him in to your veterinarian at this time if the area where he lost the tooth is not hurting. Since you obviously have scheduled a dental cleaning for Milo, your vet can inspect the area during the dental cleaning while he is under sedation. The vet will also do dental radiographs to check for retained roots and neck lesions. These will need to be removed.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The first thing you need to do, is to stop Milo from licking the wound. Head collar will be best. Then you should clean the wound with warm, boiled water 2-3 times a day. However, if the would is swollen and thickened (it does look a bit like that on the photos), your Milo may need to be seen at your local vets to get a course of antibiotics. It is hard to say what happened, it could have been a piece of glass, barbed wire, metal sheet that cut the skin.

As long as she is eating and drinking without discomfort, I think waiting is fine. Your veterinarian will evaluate all of her remaining teeth and advise you on any extractions that will be needed at the time of the dental. If she is acting normal (eating, drinking, playing, eliminating normally) I think you are ok to wait until your vet is open. If she won't eat and drink you should find a vet that is open and have her evaluated. Most times these situations are not emergencies unless the owner has a show dog or cat. Poor guy. You can try an over the counter oral rinse or water additive from your local pet store for a few days to a week to see if there is improvement. These products typically provide a really good antiseptic cleanse of the area and can help heal minor lesions around or in the mouth. However, if you notice any swelling, or no improvement within that time frame, its best to have Pete looked at by your vet. He likely will need antibiotics to help it heal if that is the case. Also it is not normal for a pet to loose teeth, so it is best to have Pete a complete oral exam and assessment to ensure he doesn't need further care. I hope that your furry friend gets better soon! Yes, Toby should have a dental. He might have other loose teeth in his mouth, it needs to be checked that the entire tooth came out (roots included), and he may have severe gingivitis that requires a cleaning, scaling, and polishing. I would bring him into the vet as soon as possible during normal business hours.

Poor Milo. This all could be him recovering from the stress of the dental procedure. If he had any teeth removed, he could also be a bit painful. I could ask your vet for pain medications if so. Otherwise, keep a close eye on him and if he doesn't improve, he should be seen by a vet.
