My old dog snores and sleeps a lot after dental surgery, is it normal?

If there are no other signs (like coughing retching or sneezing and others) this is not usually a very clinically significant symptom. In case other signs are present as well, an upper respiratory tract infection/inflammation could be present.

Older dogs can take longer to completely process the anesthesia medications and return fully to normal. If she's on any pain medications after the cleaning (for example if she had dental extractions), that could also be causing some sedation. If she's eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and appears comfortable, there's nothing you need to do right now and can give her another day or two to be totally normal. If she's not back to normal tomorrow evening, it might be wise to take her in for an appointment Friday before the weekend to make sure nothing else is going on.

The upper teeth have roots that extend very closely to the nasal passages and if Custard had any teeth removed, then it's possible that there could be some irritation, or bleeding in the nasal passages. This often heals soon after the surgery, but may take a week or two. If he didn't have any teeth removed, or his problem worsens over the next week, then it would be worthwhile to have your vet examine him. Signs of a worsening problem are an increase in sneezing, coughing and discharge from the nose. This can be a sign of infection, so it's possible that he will need additional treatment. After being intubated, sometimes the tube placed in the airway can cause irritation leading to a cough or other abnormal breathing sounds. What you are describing sounds almost as if Token has an excessive soft palate causing the snoring sound. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the dental cleaning and having him / her examine Token so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Nasal discharge can be caused by many different things, including bad dental disease/infected teeth, bacterial or fungal sinus infection, a foreign object in the nasal cavity, or even nasal cancer. Your veterinarian, after performing a physical exam and obtaining the complete medical history, will be able to determine which of these causes are more likely. If a dental procedure and tooth extraction is recommended, your veterinarian will determine whether Spike is healthy to undergo the anesthesia. Just like in humans, anesthetic procedures are not without risk. However, as long as a good physical exam is done and pre-operative bloodwork indicates that he is healthy, he is not at a higher risk than any other dog. Oftentimes dogs vocalize during anesthesia recovery because of the effects of the medications or they are confused. Talk to your veterinarian about this concern and steps can be taken to ensure that he has a safe and minimally stressful recovery.

IT is a possibility, although usually there is no long term effect and the symptoms seems to disappear within a few days to a few weeks. if it happens just with food and doesn't seem to bother him otherwise, i would not worry too much about it at the moment.

It depends quite a bit on what drugs and doses were used for anesthesia, so unfortunately it's difficult to give a good answer to this question without being able to look at his medical record. But in general, for most anesthetic procedures, it's not uncommon for many dogs to remain somewhat groggy or drowsy for up to 12 hours or so afterwards - my rule of thumb for owners at our clinic is that their pet should be acting normal again by the following morning, but not to worry overly much if they are a bit sleepy or "off" for the rest of the afternoon or evening after going home. However, the pet should be able to get up and walk around, eat and drink without problems, etc. - if they are groggy to the point of being unresponsive or unable to stand, this is not normal. If you are concerned about Falkor, the safest course of action would be to call your vet's office and describe how he is currently acting - they should be able to tell you if this is reasonable, based on their anesthesia protocol. If he is unresponsive, having difficulty swallowing, or seems to be getting worse over time, I would take him back to your vet or your nearest emergency clinic to be checked.
