My puppy had a seizure. Is it due to low blood sugar from not eating?

Pet's info: Dog | Brussels Griffon | Male | 2 months and 26 days old | 1lb

My 11 week Brussel Griffon had a seizure today. He weighs a pound and 9 ounces. Unfortunately he ran out of his food yesterday. I was giving him a some Stella and chewy to hold him up till today. This morning I quickly realized that he wasn’t himself because he had no energy. That’s when he had the seizure. So I guess my question here is could’ve been because he had low blood pressure due to not eating enough yesterday?

Hello. The seizure may have been from a low blood glucose ( sugar ) level. Make sure Malone eats 3 good meals a day & if he skips a meal, have some Karo Syrup or Nutrical ( available at all pet stores ) on hand & give him 1/2 - 1 teaspoon to give him a sugar boost. If he continues to have seizures, even after eating well & on a regular basis, please have him evaluated for other causes of seizures. I hope he is doing better soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to conditions such as idiopathic epilepsy (where no cause is found), low blood sugar, inflammatory brain disease, cancer, toxicity, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to get more information and have a physical examination performed which may help narrow down the possible causes of this seizure. They will likely perform basic labwork to rule out the possibility of low blood sugar. Treatment for any of these conditions vary greatly and further advanced work up via a MRI will be needed to have a better idea or ultimately know exactly what is going on. Good luck! Epilepsy or a brain tumor are the top two things on the list. He should be on anti-seizure medication. It is not low blood sugar in a 5 year old dog unless he has a tumor on his pancreas. Please take him back to the vet and get him put on some medications to help control his seizures.

I would recommend seeing your veterinarian right away. Even though Otis has a history of seizures, seizures could also be a sign of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and his insulin dose may need to be adjusted. If he has another seizure you should rub some Karo syrup on his gums and see a veterinarian immediately so his blood sugar can be checked.

See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. My 7-week-old puppy is shaking, seizing, and very weak. What's wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may be due to having a low blood sugar from being so small. Usually small breed dogs require to be fed throughout the day every 6 hours or so. However, this could also be due to something else like a toxicity of some kind. Seizures can be detrimental to a dog's health and this warrants an evaluation as soon as possible by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

Is my Chihuahua puppy shaking due to seizures or low blood sugar?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dot. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine if she is truly having seizures and if so, the cause of them. Given her age and breed, I am concerned she is experiencing low blood sugar triggering the seizures. If this happens again before she can be seen, apply some Karo syrup to her gums. If this is the case, it should help. You also should have food available to her at all times. This can prevent episodes from happening if it is due to low blood sugar. I hope this information helps!

My teacup Yorkie puppy has seizures, circles, and won't eat. Help!

Hello. This is unfortunate for you and your puppy. Sometimes, very small toy breed puppies can not regulate their blood sugar and become hypoglycemic, have seizures and neurological issues. If your vet has not monitored his blood glucose- that needs to be done. This can be treated with a high caloric supplement called NutriCal that can be given throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. The other thing to test for is a liver shunt. This is a congenital malformation of blood vessels that go to and from the liver. If your puppy has a shunt, their liver is usually smaller than normal and cannot perform its normal functions. This can cause toxins to build up and that causes seizures. This disorder can sometimes be corrected with surgery or managed with special diets and medication. If your veterinarian is uncomfortable moving forward , ask to be referred to an internal medicine specialist or even just another general practitioner with more experience with these issues. My puppy is wobbly and unstable after napping, is it dehydration?

I am sorry to hear about Sailor! I would be concerned given her history about a possible hypoglycemic episode (low blood sugar) which is not uncommon in toy breed puppies. I would also be concerned that prior seizures could be a result of hypoglycemia. We don't normally see seizures as a result of not having vaccinations unless your dog had contracted distemper. I would recommend having your vet examine her. We also worry in young puppies with seizures about a liver shunt. My parvo puppy had a seizure and bloody stool. What should I do?

I would notify your vet that she had a possible seizure first. Then I would try to make sure she has a consistent source of food or sugar to keep her glucose levels steady, in case that was the cause for her seizure. If you see the event happen again then it's best to record it so that your vet can see what is happening and classify the event correctly. Continue to give her fluids and other medicaitons as instructed by your veterinarian, unless possible seizure can be a side effect of one of her medicaitons (i.e. metronidazole). If your puppy is a small or you breed dog then she is at risk for hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), so it's important to give her nutrical, Karo syrup or honey (1 tsp) every 4-6 hrs if she hasn't gained her appetite back yet. Once she starts to eat on her own then discuss with your vet how often she should get the sugar source, if at all. I hope that your pup survives her CPV infection. Best wishes and take care.
