My dog has eaten grass since puppyhood. Is it normal? Should I worry?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My dog has been eating grass since he was a few weeks old and able to run and walk, we've brought him to the vet when he was 2 months old to see if it was something more but the vet said there was nothing wrong or nothing to be concerned about, now that he's a year and a half old should I be concerned?, it's small amounts of grass randomly, never a lot or an everyday thing

Some dogs like to eat grass! As long as they have good appetites (for dog food!) and are not frequent vomiters, there is nothing wrong with eating grass. I do recommend that Chopi is routinely dewormed for common intestinal parasites (often included in monthly heartworm preventatives) and that you do not treat your grass with any chemicals.

Hi there. Many dogs like to eat grass when they go outside, especially in the springtime - it seems to taste good to them, for whatever reason :) As long as Gracie is acting normal otherwise and not having any other symptoms of a GI problem, this should not be any cause for concern.

Some dogs just like to eat grass. As long as they have a good appetite, aren't vomiting or having diarrhea, and they are on a monthly dewormer (such as a monthly heartworm preventative), I wouldn't be too concerned.

If she's eating a balanced commercial diet and absorbing it Chloe should be getting all the vitamins and minerals and needs. As long as Chloe is eating, drinking and acting normally you could watch her dog now. But if she stops eating, vomits blood or coffee-ground looking material, or seems painful she should get checked out by her veterinarian

Pets will eat grass when they are either bored or have an upset stomach. By eating the grass it will tickle their throat on the way down and usually cause them to vomit up whatever is upsetting their stomach. If Riley isn't vomiting or has a decreased appetite, then he is likely just bored. I would however refrain him from eating grass, to prevent him from having any vomiting episodes. My dog keeps eating grass daily. Is this normal or a health concern?

Hello, thank you for your question about Kiyah. Often times when dogs eat grass it is because they are feeling nauseous. Nausea can be a sign of GI upset or other underlying GI disease. If Kiyah is otherwise acting ok and has continued to eat and drink normally, you could continue to monitor her. Additionally, you could offer her a bland/easily digestable diet such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice to help settle her stomach. If these symptoms continue or Kiyah begins vomiting, refusing food, or becomes lethargic I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. They can examine her and discuss the need for additional diagnostics or treatments. Hope this helps!

If this is a new thing then it may be that Izzy does have an upset stomach. If Izzy has always done this I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it is new then I would monitor and if any other symptoms develop bring Izzy to a veterinarian. Why does my dog eat grass? Is it a nutrient deficiency or harmful?

You are welcome! Some dogs just like the taste! This is pretty common. It doesn’t necessarily mean a deficiency in diet. I remember you from other questions about Chloe, and recall you are very on to it with her nutrition, so I don’t think that’s the case here. Sometimes dogs can eat grass due to nausea, but you’d like see other signs of stomach upset with that like drooling and a loss of appetite. I suspect she likes the taste. It’s not harmful as long as there are no pesticides on the grass.

My dog won't stop eating grass. Is it a health issue? What to do?

Some dogs acquire a taste for grass and will chew it for no reason. However, it could be a sign of an underlying problem as well. I would suggest you give him an antacid tablet once per day every day for about a week or two to see if it helps. I assume you can get Famotidine in Bulgaria at your local pharmacy? He can have 10mg once a day. I would give it on an empty stomach and then wait 30 to 40 minutes and then offer his food. I would try this first to see what happens.
