Why does my dog eat grass every spring and summer, even if healthy?

Why does my dog eat grass in the Spring and Summer? I know he doesn't have any health problems.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While we do not know why some dogs do this (my own dogs included), there may be several plausible reasons. They may eat it because it tastes good, out of boredom or even to make themselves vomit if they aren't feeling well. It is best to avoid this as much as possible. The reason is that the grass during the spring and summer can be sprayed with pesticides which can be quite toxic to dogs. My own theory is that one possible reason they seem to eat it is because of stuff sprayed on them like pesticides which may have a flavor they enjoy. Good luck and have a great day!

Hello there!

Dogs are omnivores and often enjoy the taste of grass. Eating grass is not associated with any nutritional deficiencies or disease processes and is considered a normal behavior. :)

It is one of the things we may never know for sure. Some just like certain type of grass because they taste good to them, others do it out of boredom. We do know it is not related to GI upset directly or a nutritional deficiency.

You are welcome! Some dogs just like the taste! This is pretty common. It doesn’t necessarily mean a deficiency in diet. I remember you from other questions about Chloe, and recall you are very on to it with her nutrition, so I don’t think that’s the case here. Sometimes dogs can eat grass due to nausea, but you’d like see other signs of stomach upset with that like drooling and a loss of appetite. I suspect she likes the taste. It’s not harmful as long as there are no pesticides on the grass.

Pets will eat grass when they are either bored or have an upset stomach. By eating the grass it will tickle their throat on the way down and usually cause them to vomit up whatever is upsetting their stomach. If Riley isn't vomiting or has a decreased appetite, then he is likely just bored. I would however refrain him from eating grass, to prevent him from having any vomiting episodes. My dog has eaten grass since puppyhood. Is it normal? Should I worry?

Some dogs like to eat grass! As long as they have good appetites (for dog food!) and are not frequent vomiters, there is nothing wrong with eating grass. I do recommend that Chopi is routinely dewormed for common intestinal parasites (often included in monthly heartworm preventatives) and that you do not treat your grass with any chemicals.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The easiest way to schedule a check up would be by calling the clinic. I do think that would be a great idea. Eating grass is a non-specific finding that is sometimes seen in some dogs and can happen literally for no reason other than them wanting to taste it. There are times that dogs do it when they have a stomach upset but that is not consistent so I would not say that is what is going on with Greyson necessarily. Best of luck!

Why is my dog eating grass and pooping it out immediately for weeks?

This generally means a dog is nauseous for some reason - although some dogs just enjoy eating grass for unclear reasons (flavor, the dew on it, etc). I would recommend scheduling a check in with his vet for an exam and possibly blood work to make sure everything is looking ok. He might benefit from a probiotic to changing to a high fiber/easily digestible diet like Purina EN + Fiber Balence.

My dog eats grass and vomits. Is this a health issue or just behavior?

It could be either - some dogs with gastrointestinal disease will eat grass and the occasional vomiting could be a sign of nausea. It’s also possible that this is simply a preference that Otis has. I would recommend having him examined by a vet to make sure there is no concern for a gastrointestinal problem. They might recommend checking blood work as well.

My dog keeps eating grass but isn't throwing up. What should I do?

If this is a new thing then it may be that Izzy does have an upset stomach. If Izzy has always done this I wouldn't worry too much about it. If it is new then I would monitor and if any other symptoms develop bring Izzy to a veterinarian.
