My puppy wants cheese. Can they eat it, and how much is too much?

I wouldn't recommend giving cheese as it is high in fat and not needed in your pets diet. It's also likely to cause diarrhea. Instead it's best to stick with dog approved treats. Some foods like apples, bananas and green beans are also ok and provide more nutritional value than cheese.

I don't consider cheese to be a bad reward in very small quantities. That entire piece of cheese is likely to be ALL the calories Draco needs for a full day. So if you are going to give any high value treat, do so in teeny tiny pieces. If you can find a kibble he really likes, I recommend giving their kibble as treats. You can feed a meal as treats through the day instead of giving it all at once. Or you can set aside 1/2 of his breakfast and give that as treats. In a dog this small you will need to be very cautious with over doing the calories in the form of treats! The metabolism of every dog is a little different, but as a rough guideline a dog Draco's size needs about 160 calories a day. So it doesn't take much to give too many calories and cause weight gain.

Cheese is not healthy for dogs, can cause loose stool, provides no nutritional value and also can make your pet overweight. I would not recommend giving cheese to your pet. Instead you can give your pet dog treats or puppy cheese (safe for pets and has less chance of causing loose stool) in a kong toy to keep him occupied. String cheese in small amounts can be a nice treat, but too much could cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. I have often used string cheese as a special treat when my dogs are in obedience training. But too much cheese can lead to weight gain, so I would limit it to a special, occasional treat instead of something that Kieko gets every day.

A small amount of grated cheese may be ok but some animals have digestive issues when eating diary products. If your dog doesnt seem to have a problem with it than a small amount should be ok.

He may be able to handle it. As dogs mature and wean, they produce less of the enzyme required to digest milk and dairy products. The result is that they become lactose intolerant. This can lead to gastrointestinal upset if they ingest dairy products. You can try a small amount and then monitor him for any signs of upset (vomiting, diarrhea, gas, etc). If so, you'll need to discontinue offering these types of food. If he tolerates it, offer only small amounts infrequently.

Oh Cooper, mischievous Golden Retriever puppy! Cheese is not toxic but in large quantities or in patients sensitive to dairy products it can cause gastrointestinal upset. I would monitor Cooper for the development of vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation over the next 24-48 hours. If these develop, I would have him examined by his veterinarian to assess if an anti-nausea medication, probiotic, or laxative is needed.
