My 4-month-old puppy ate a block of cheddar cheese. Is he okay?

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | unneutered | 46.5 lbs

My golden retriever puppy who is about 4 months old ate a block of extra sharp cheddar cheese. I need to know if this is OK ASAP I don't want anything to happen to my little cooper.

Oh Cooper, mischievous Golden Retriever puppy! Cheese is not toxic but in large quantities or in patients sensitive to dairy products it can cause gastrointestinal upset. I would monitor Cooper for the development of vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation over the next 24-48 hours. If these develop, I would have him examined by his veterinarian to assess if an anti-nausea medication, probiotic, or laxative is needed.

You don't mention how big the block of cheese or whether the cheese was plain or flavored (i.e. With jalapeños or something) cheddar cheese. However, as long as Cooper didn't eat the packaging and just ate a regular block of cheddar cheese (average cheese blocks are about 8oz), he should be ok. He may have some soft stool for the next day or so, keep an eye on his appetite, activity level, and bowel movements. If anything seems abnormal you should contact your local veterinarian. My own dogs have been known to get into cheese and they are much smaller than your sweet boy and we've never had any problems. Again, monitor him and maybe feed him a smaller than normal dinner tonight to make up for the extra calories he ate. Good luck, I hope I could be of help to you two!

If necessary, you can fast him for 6-12 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or GI upset that does not resolve. See your veterinarian for an exam and treatment if any of these symptoms develop.

He may be able to handle it. As dogs mature and wean, they produce less of the enzyme required to digest milk and dairy products. The result is that they become lactose intolerant. This can lead to gastrointestinal upset if they ingest dairy products. You can try a small amount and then monitor him for any signs of upset (vomiting, diarrhea, gas, etc). If so, you'll need to discontinue offering these types of food. If he tolerates it, offer only small amounts infrequently.

My German Shepherd ate garlic cheese and plastic. Is he okay?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear Gustav got ahold of something he shouldn't. The issue with garlic cheese in a wrapper is twofold; garlic can be toxic to dogs, and the wrapper can cause an intestinal obstruction. I would keep a close eye on Gustav (and his stool! for the next couple of days for any vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence, lethargy, or any other signs that he is feeling ill. If these are seen, I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian right away. If there was a large amount of garlic in the cheese, I would also recommend touching base with animal poison control to see if he needs any treatment for a possible toxicity. Good luck!

My dog ate smoked goat cheese, coughing, bloated. Should I worry?

He should not need a vet for this. Goat cheese is not toxic or harmful- it just may not agree with him. I’d only we worried if he starts vomiting, then you should take him to the vet. As a side note, please refrain from giving any human foods to your dog. Really, they don’t need it and it can cause problems as you can see. This is mild but other foods can cause serious issues. Stick to dog food and dog treats. Best wishes.

While she could develop dietary indiscretion from eating something high in fat, pumping her stomach would probably be a bit much. I would watch her closely for signs of dietary indiscretion like vomiting, diarrhea and inappetence and if observed have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment at that point. There is a chance that she will be ok with this and not develop any signs though I would watch her closely in case she need therapy. Good luck and best wishes! I hope she does great!
