Can my dog eat boiled chicken bones? Is it safe for puppies?

No I never give cooked chicken bones as they become hard after cooking and will splinter and can cause intestinal perforations or a blockage that can be life threatening and need emergency surgery to repair. Raw chicken necks with bones are fed by some people who feed a raw diet but I have seen problems with those also including vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Cooked chicken meat without the boxes, and chicken broth are fine to add into Eli's diet but please don't give the bones. No, please do not feed this to Tyson. It's never recommend to feed cooked bones to dogs because they easily splinter in the GI tract causing perforation and obstruction. Raw bones aren't recommended either because they break teeth and cause obstructions of the GI tract.

I never recommend giving raw chicken or bones. I've seen too many bones break teeth, cause obstruction, and/or damage to the GI tract. The chicken should be fully cooked. There are absolutely no benefits to feeding a dog raw chicken,.

This is not an acceptable diet for a nursing dog, or even for any dog. It's not balanced, and the bones of the chicken can easily cause GI obstruction or perforation of the intestinal tract. She may not be pooping a lot because she isn't getting enough food daily or the potential of an obstruction from the bones. Nursing dogs need a puppy formulated food. This is because they require higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food would provide that. Please put her on a puppy food now, and once the puppies are done nursing, then put her on a adult dog food. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Is it safe for my dog to chew on bones? What are the dangers?

No! Dogs should NEVER be given raw or cooked animal bones for several reasons. Raw bones run the risk of transmitting harmful bacteria, including Salmonella or Campylobacter, both to your dog and any exposed people. These bacteria can be transmitted through a dog’s stool and saliva. Bones can also pose hazards for foreign body obstruction in the esophagus, stomach, or intestines. Poultry bones are inherently filled with air and cooked bones become more brittle, both of which can splinter leading to perforation of the stomach or intestines. Bones and antlers are also quite hard and can lead to tooth fractures. Instead of offering bones, alternative products such as Nylabones, Kongs, or the dental treats approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (www.vohc.org) are safer and more effective alternatives for dogs that like to chew.

Dog vomited after eating fresh bone. Is raw bone safe for dogs?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Eli! The fresh bone may be causing an upset tummy or even a blockage if a large piece was broken off. Also raw meat and bone can contain bacteria that can cause vomiting or diarrhea (like food poisoning). I would resume feeding the mutton and bone as previous, cooked. In the mean time stop the fresh mutton and feed her a bland diet of rice with boiled chicken or hamburger as small frequent meal for 3-5 days. Then resume her old diet. If she refuses to eat or continues to vomit then she should be seen by your Vet. Have a great day!

Is it safe for dogs to have chicken broth and cooked chicken?

It is fine to use some of the chicken broth for flavoring on dog food. Just make sure there was no aggressive seasoning or excessive salt used. The best broth for dogs would be non seasoned or low salt broth. Also you would want to skim out the fat if there is a lot of it or let it set up in the fridge first so you can remove the larger fat layer. Giving cooked chicken is also no problem as a treat. Can I safely give my puppy chicken pieces as a training treat?

Occasional treats of plain, unseasoned, boiled chicken is probably ok. However, it is best only to use in special circumstances, like during training sessions.
