Is it safe to give my dog cooked chicken? What do vets recommend?

It is fine to use some of the chicken broth for flavoring on dog food. Just make sure there was no aggressive seasoning or excessive salt used. The best broth for dogs would be non seasoned or low salt broth. Also you would want to skim out the fat if there is a lot of it or let it set up in the fridge first so you can remove the larger fat layer. Giving cooked chicken is also no problem as a treat. No I never give cooked chicken bones as they become hard after cooking and will splinter and can cause intestinal perforations or a blockage that can be life threatening and need emergency surgery to repair. Raw chicken necks with bones are fed by some people who feed a raw diet but I have seen problems with those also including vomiting and bloody diarrhea. Cooked chicken meat without the boxes, and chicken broth are fine to add into Eli's diet but please don't give the bones. Yes, you can give your pup cooked chicken or meat as an occasional treat. I would boil the chicken or meat as that's the healthiest way to give it to your pup. Too much fat can lead to pancreatitis, so never give your pup pork and only lean cuts of meat :-)

Occasional treats of plain, unseasoned, boiled chicken is probably ok. However, it is best only to use in special circumstances, like during training sessions. Cooked chicken only - not raw. No butter, oil or spices. Really though, it is best to give dog food and dog treats only. Once you start giving human foods, often these little dogs will start refusing to eat their dog food and then it becomes a big problem. Hope this helps. Good question!

While cooked, boiled chicken and beef is OK to give as a treat, it should not be your dog's main source of food. It is much better to feed a balanced diet or commercial dog food that is nutritionally balanced to provide the right nutrition. Feeding only meat is not enough for your dog to stay healthy and growth healthy. You can add in a little piece of boiled meat with the fat trimmed off, however it should not be given as a meal as it can cause digestive upset and nutritional problems.

Cooked chicken bones usually do not cause a problem and the stomach acids tend to break the bones down. You can bulk up his diet with bread/fiber to help them pass, but that is likely unnecessary. Sometimes it isn't the bones that cause a problem but the sauce or seasoning that does-upset stomach and/or pancreatitis. It might not be wrong to feed a bland diet for a few days.
