My Lab's ear is drooping after cleaning, no pain. What should I do?

If you mean a fluid filled pocket in the ear flap that is an aural hemotoma. It is from scratching and getting some bleeding in between the skin layers in the ear flap. Ear infections are very painful and are more difficult to clear up in dogs with floppy ears like your lab. This needs veterinary treatment. You can clean the ear canals with a dog ear cleaner or a mixture of white vinegar and water which will help reduce the ear discharge. If she has a hematoma they should be drained and treated by your veterinarian to prevent scarring of the ear flaps. If the ear is droopy and she is shaking her head she probably has an ear infection. Because of the head shaking and probably scratching as well, blood vessels in the ear are exploding, causing blood and fluids to fill the pinea ans swell. This condition is called "ear hematoma" and needs medical or surgical treatment. The ear infection needs to be treated as well as it is the primary cause, usually ear drops from the vet will solve this, in some cases systemic antibiotics are prescribed as well. Regarding the the droopy ear I personally prefer the medical treatment (steroids for 4 weeks) over the surgical one, unfortunately most vets will still opt for the surgery.

Sometimes this can be contributed to developmental factors and the cartilage in the ear becomes more firm in a particular position. Sometimes an ear infection can cause an ear to lay differently then the other. I have never heard of an E-collar damaging an ear, nor have I heard of a microchip causing damage (it is just placed in the space under the skin of the back). So, I think the ear is unlikely related to these two things - but if something seems off to you, it certainly may be worth touching base with your vet. They might want you to run Charley in for a quick recheck to ensure all is well. My highest suspicion would be that he's just tired of wearing that cone....but if you're worried, it's worth checking with your vet for peace of mind. Good luck - hope this helps!

I'm sorry to hear that you recently lost your lab :( Other dogs can certainly be emotionally affected by the loss of a housemate, so it is not unusual for them to act off for some time. As long as Louie remains active, and is still eating/drinking/urinating and defecating normally, he will likely be OK. I hope this is helpful!

Well Marshall is about the cutest thing I have seen in awhile! If the injury on his ear caused a lot of build up of scar tissue, this could weigh down the ear a bit. Or if there is a build of fluid you may see the same result. I would recommend to have your vet do an exam to ensure there is nothing that needs to be done to help intervene. Either way, he is truly adorable with those big brown eyes.
