My dog seems depressed after losing a pet. Are warm ears a concern?

I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that it can be determined if perhaps he still has some remaining inflammation/infection in the inner parts of the ear that could be causing that. Also, they can evaluate his cranial nerves to make sure that it is not primarily a neurologic issue. Good luck!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This is a quite generic but concerning presentation. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing high temperature) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours. Fourteen is a good old age for a Labrador. Often they seem fine but they are frail and aren’t able to fight off infections like a young dog, and if she had trouble with her legs the lack of exercise may also have contributed. While she may not have enjoyed the new dog that shouldn’t have caused her illness unless it gave her the cold that became pneumonia. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bean. I am sorry to hear about your recent loss. It sounds like Bean is grieving the loss as well. She should start acting more normal soon, but if her behavior persists she will need to see her veterinarian. If she is not anything, vomiting or displaying other abnormal signs, she should be seen soon. If her appetite is just decreased then you can give her another week or so. Be sure to encourage her to eat and drink as much as possible. You can try hand feeding her or adding warm water to her kibble. Sometimes warmed up canned food is enticing as well. Without having an examination it's hard to determine why Darby may be acting this way. Because Darby is younger I feel it's important to have her checked out by a veterinarian within the next few weeks to see if there is a medical issue. You may also want to record the behavior to show to your veterinarian during the appointment.

A warm nose and warm ears are very nonspecific findings and I would pay more attention to his overall attitude, behavior and appetite. (A "dry nose" indicating that a dog is sick is also a myth). It sounds like he is playful, and eating and drinking well, so I would not be concerned. As long as he continues to act normally and have normal urination and bowel movements, and no vomiting, it sounds like he is well on the road to recovery! I hope this is helpful!

Animals do show emotion and it very well could be that she is grieving or missing your 12 year old dog. If they were together for a long time, and now your other dog is missing, this is a big change in Kita's environment not having her friend around. I would recommend providing her with plenty of toys to play with and take her out a lot. If this is due to emotional stress, it should hopefully resolve with time. If any new symptoms develop I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Kita and test her blood for any abnormal changes. I hope this helps!
