My dog drowned. Is blood from its mouth normal for drowning?

Hi, I am sorry to hear that Mary passed away so suddenly. It must have been a real shock for you. I think the fluid you noticed is inflammatory fluid coming from the chest because of the presence of cancer. This is secondary to the presence of the tumour, sadly can’t be treated and does aggravate the breathing itself. I hope Mary did not suffer. Thinking about you at this difficult time.

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry to hear this! I would be concerned that Maya either got into something toxic while she was out running around or she became overheated and died of heat stroke. There is also a chance she could have had an underlying heart condition that was never diagnosed. Finally there could have been some sort of trauma she encounter like being hit by a car. The watery blood that came out of her nose has most likely come from her lungs. This can be abnormal finding after an animal passes away under more traumatic circumstances. If this recently happened you could take Mays's remains in to your vet and request a necropsy be performed. This may help determine her cause of death. Much sympathy to you.

It’s not unusual for their mouth to be in a variety of different positions at death, and depending on their skin type and breed, some dogs will appear to have their eyes closed. This dog would be examined using the ABCs (airway, breathing, circulation) and if stable, would have blood testing (CBC, chemistry) and chest x-rays to evaluate for rib fractures, integrity of the diaphragm, and pulmonary contusions (although these can take 24 hours to develop radiographically). In most cases, the dog would also have an IV catheter placed and be started on a "shock dose" of IV fluids.

Hello. It does not sound like anything is too serious with Frankie. If there was any aspiration pneumonia from the water, his symptoms would be worsening, not be intermittent. He may have swallowed a bit more pool water than normal that irritated his stomach or esophagus. He may be regurgitating a bit just from this alone. As long as he seems pretty normal, his resting respiratory rate is between 30 - 40 breaths per minute, then he may just have irritated things & should do fine in a few days. But if the coughing worsens, then this may be a case of tracheobronchitis that might respond very nicely to anti-inflammatory medication & an antibiotic. Hi there, sorry about the loss of your friend. Fluid drainage post mitten can be indicative of heart failure or pulmonary (lung) fluids buildup. It is also possible she had a tumor of some sort causing the buildup. I hope this helps you find some peace. My best to you.

Hi. She would need a full oral exam to know for sure. But some possibilities include: dental disease, infected tooth, ulcers in the mouth, foreign material stuck in mouth, or in the tongue. Check her mouth very closely, and call your veterinarian first thing in the morning. Good luck.
