Why is my dog's breath bloody and fishy, and she's bleeding?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 2 years old | 23.5 lbs

I noticed a change in my dog’s breath lately. It smells like bloody and fishy at the same time. It’s not too bothering but if she licks my hands or face and directly smell it I notice it. I played tug of war with her and noticed blood in the rope as well. What could this be?

Hi. She would need a full oral exam to know for sure. But some possibilities include: dental disease, infected tooth, ulcers in the mouth, foreign material stuck in mouth, or in the tongue. Check her mouth very closely, and call your veterinarian first thing in the morning. Good luck.
