Why is my dog's breath bloody and fishy, and she's bleeding?

I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an oral exam. There may be some hidden oral disease you cannot see, she may have a tumor or polyp somewhere in her mouth or nasal passages, kidney disease can cause bad breath, there are a number of possibilities. You vet will do a thorough exam, possibly bloodwork and based on these results, be better able to tell you what is going on with your dog and how best to treat it.

It could be a loose tooth. Do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. See if she will let you look at her mouth gently so you can try to stop the bleeding if possible. If not, don't push it. Do not give her any food tonight or in the morning, and get her into a vet asap. She can have water.

Unless you are able to examine Razzoo's mouth and can identify normal tissue vs diseased tissue (and find the obvious cause), I recommend to have Razzoo examined today by the veterinarian. Blood can indicate a wound, something stuck in the tissue, a diseased tooth, a ruptured oral tumor or even a bleeding disorder. It is very important to diagnose the appropriate cause of the bleeding. It is not possible to know the full extent of this just based on pictures though this does look like significant gingivitis and dental disease. Sometimes this is due to pure inflammation secondary to dental disease and sometimes there may be an infection. I recommend you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

Dental abscesses, broken teeth and ulcers can all cause pain, as can foreign bodies stuck in the mouth. A full dental exam under sedation may be required and blood tests for kidney disease may be recommended also

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Moon! If your dogs got in to a fight then it is possible that there is a wound in her mouth. Blood does smell like metal. It is difficult to find small wounds in the mouth of an awake dog. I want to reassure you that small wounds in the mouth usually heal quickly on their own. If you are not seeing blood, bloody drool, she is comfortable, isn't doing weird things with her mouth, is eating and drinking then I wouldn't worry. Another possibility is that during the fight one of the dogs expressed their anal glands. Anal glands well like sulfury, fishy, metallic stool. Check around both dogs hind ends. Clean them with soap and water if you notice the smell there. I wish you the best!

Poor guy. He is an older pet, so this is concerning. Bleeding from the roof of the mouth may suggest an oral tumor, a laceration (cut) or infected and rotting tooth. The only way you are going to find out for sure is to have him seen by your vet for a full oral exam. Until you can get him seen, you should purchase a water additive to help rinse his mouth daily and help prevent infection or further infection. If the bleeding isn't too profuse and seems to resolve, then a laceration was likely present, that is healing well. That would be the best case scenario! : ) I do hope that Ratman's mouth can be examined without sedation and that you can get to the bottom of this mysterious bleeding. Best wishes and take care.
