My small dog is drooling heavily after being outside, what's wrong?

Drooling/salivation could be caused by a number of things, including stress, excitement, nausea, dental pain, toxin ingestion, a foreign body stuck in the mouth, injury to the tongue (as can happen with electrical injury from chewing on electrical cords) or bloat. If Vinny could have eaten anything such as medications, household cleaners, plants, toys, food scraps, or garbage, please have him seen by a vet right away, and let your vet know about it to help them determine if there could be toxicity. If no medical cause is noted, it could be stress/excitement induced, and I recommend working with a trainer who uses positive reinforcement techniques to help manage Vinny's stress and help him feel comfortable around other dogs.

This usually happens when something is irritating their mouth. This could be due to Bella chewing on a house plant, an insect, frog, or irritating chemical. They can also drool a lot if there is bad dental disease, or a laceration in the mouth. It's best to have a good look in Bella's mouth and see if you can detect anything out of the ordinary. It's also good to gently flush out her mouth (can use a hose for this) with water for a minute or two. If she happens to cough, then this indicates you are flushing too hard, or too much. Poor Chunk. Drooling is often a sign of nausea or stress. I would continue to watch him closely and make sure he does not become sick. I would limit his activity for the rest of the day and keep his meals small. If he starts vomiting you may want to have him seen by a veterinarian.

He may have ingested something he was not supposed to such as lizard or frog or sticks or getting into garbage. If they pant or drool excessively with their mouth open, they can ingest a lot of air to gas bloating. Drooling can also be a sign of nausea or pain. IF there is abdominal cramping from all the gas it can cause more drooling and nausea. The best thing to do is have them to continue to monitor him to make sure his pain in controlled and monitor for vomiting and make sure the gas dissolves and continues to be passed and does not cause pancreatitis or an ileus.

Hi there and thank you for your post! It sounds like Riley may have gotten into something outside. Hypersalivation can be from many possible causes. With his age, I would suspect something irritating (chemical, toad, insect sting) or something stuck in his oral cavity. Have you looked inside his mouth to ensure there isn't a stick or something stuck? If not, I would rinse out his mouth with the hose on low pressure and see if that helps. If there is any swelling, I would give a dose of Benadryl and take him to your veterinarian right away in case this is a severe allergic reaction. The dose of Benadryl would be 100mg if Riley's weight is indeed 100lb. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions / concerns

Drooling is a sign of nausea which could be caused by something she ate. She may correct herself, so I would suggest perhaps monitoring her for the next 6 hrs to see if this behavior stops. If she continues to drool and/or other symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea, lack of appetite) develop then that is definitely a good time to get her checked by your local veterinarian. Other possible causes of drooling are: problems with her teeth, infection, and nausea due to organ malfunction (i.e. kidneys, liver, etc). You can also offer her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for the next few feedings to see if this too will help settle her stomach. Hypersalivation can be caused by issues swallowing, nausea, or dental disease. Sometimes, twigs or sharp objects can get logded between the teeth or in the palate, so you can take a look in Kola's mouth if he will allow it safely. Unfortunately, their is no "quick fix" as the cause is not known. If you believe that Kola is having trouble swallowing (dribbling water, unable to swallow food) he should be seen immediately, as he may aspirate and can develop pneumonia. Otherwise, you should monitor him closely and have him seen as soon as possible.
