My dog is drinking and peeing a lot after fever shots. Is it normal?

Hello! My dog had a fever on Tuesday night and we took her to the vet on Wednesday. The vet gave her a shot of antibiotics and an anti fever shot both on Wednesday and Thursday and her fever was gone by the afternoon on Thursday. Since yesterday she started to drink a lot more water, especially at night, and I had to take her out to pee even in the middle of the night. Other than that, she acts the same as usual, she’s eating and she’s happy. Can you please tell me what could the cause of that?

The anti-fever shot was likely a steroid/anti-inflammatory injection which typically has side effects of increasing thirst and peeing. This may persist for another 1-3 days. If she continues to have to pee in the middle of the night after this time, consulting with your veterinarian is recommended as he/she may recommend bloodwork to further characterize whether or not she has persistent signs of an infection or kidney issues which can cause increased drinking and peeing as well. If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.

Excessive drinking and urination, as well as behavioral changes (aggression, hyperactivity and agitation can all occur) can all be attributed to steroid administration. Long acting steroids can last 2-4 weeks, depending upon which exact medication was given. As the steroid wears off, you should see these side effects resolve. Fiddle will return to his normal self again, don't worry! :-)

That is expected with a high dose of steroids, however if it is a concerning amount I would let your vet know. They may want to adjust his steroid dosage, or otherwise monitor his side effects from it to see if additional treatment or changes need to be made.

Should I worry about my puppy's fever and urinating after shots?

It is not normal as most dogs do not have vaccine reactions. Is this a way that vaccine reactions could manifest? Not usually but it can be. You are doing everything right by keeping in contact with the vet and getting treatment recommendations. Just keep her calm and quiet tonight and see how she is tomorrow. If not better, I would take her back to the vet for an exam. I strongly suggest you NOT give any more aspirin. If that one dose is not helping more will not be better. Hope this helps.

Is excessive drinking and incontinence normal after pyometra surgery?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The increased drinking and urinating could result from residual infection, and irritation to the bladder during surgery. The diarrhea can be due to stress, pain, or the antibiotics. All in all I would say that if she is eating and becoming more active, I would not panic yet. Give it a few more days. If no improvement in the urination problem in 2 days, or if worsening in any way, it’s time for a recheck with your vet. Best wishes to you and Chanel.

My dog drinks and pees a lot, has clear urine, and is shaking. Why?

The most common diseases that cause dogs to drink and urinate more are urinary tract infections, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cushings disease, and addisons disease. If the urinalysis was negative for infection then, hopefully, the bloodwork will help diagnose the problem. Hopefully, the bloodwork will be back in the morning. Hope she feels better soon!

Dog feverish and sluggish after shots. Is it normal or an emergency?

Hi. Yes, this can be normal. I would monitor her thru the evening. I would also make sure the fever isn't above 103 rectally. If there is vomiting, diarrhea, hives, trouble breathing, get him in right away. Good question. Good luck.
