Is my puppy's personality change after a steroid shot normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | 2 months and 23 days old

My puppy - 11.5 w/o aussiedoodle, 6.5 Ib - was given a steroid injection 6 days ago after eating a toxic mushroom. Since then, he's been urinating frequently, very thirsty, and has been antsy and today very agitated, stressed, and barking - he's usually pretty low-key. Is this attributable to the single shot? The vet said the peeing side effect could last up to 2 weeks. I'm concerned about the personality change as a possible side effect and just want to know if this will go away soon, too...

Excessive drinking and urination, as well as behavioral changes (aggression, hyperactivity and agitation can all occur) can all be attributed to steroid administration. Long acting steroids can last 2-4 weeks, depending upon which exact medication was given. As the steroid wears off, you should see these side effects resolve. Fiddle will return to his normal self again, don't worry! :-)

My dog had a cortisone shot. How long do the side effects last?

There are different types of cortisone injections. Some are longer lasting than others. Generally the excess drinking, eating and urination wear off in a few days to a week. If the side effects last longer then you may want to have a recheck and bloodwork to see if there is an undermedical issue causing the side effects. Yes, this is normal for steroids to cause these changes in behavior. You will also likely notice that he eats more, drinks more and needs to urinate more. This is all normal and he will be back to normal after the medication is finished. Why is my dog panicking, barking, and peeing after steroids?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Marvis! Steroids can cause personality changes: some animals become aggressive, some more sedate, is causes increased thirst and urination and panting. I am concerned though that Marvis is having seizures. Video tape an episode if it happens again and pay attention if he loses consciousness during the episode. Another possibility is that she is painful. I would at a minimum call your Vet today to discuss this but I think she should be looked at again. I hope this helps and I wish Marvis the best!

My dog is drinking and peeing a lot after fever shots. Is it normal?

The anti-fever shot was likely a steroid/anti-inflammatory injection which typically has side effects of increasing thirst and peeing. This may persist for another 1-3 days. If she continues to have to pee in the middle of the night after this time, consulting with your veterinarian is recommended as he/she may recommend bloodwork to further characterize whether or not she has persistent signs of an infection or kidney issues which can cause increased drinking and peeing as well.
