My dog drinks and pees a lot, has clear urine, and is shaking. Why?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Female | spayed | 5 years and 4 months old | 120.7 lbs

I took my pug to the vet today because she's been drinking more and urinating more than usual late. What prompted me to go was she's been shaking the last few days, not constant but it happens when she lays down. They did a urinalysis and her pee was nearly clear as water which raised concern for the vet. She didn't have a uti so he ordered extensive blood work. She's shaking again tonight and I'm so worried about her so I'm trying to get a second opinion while waiting on blood work.

The most common diseases that cause dogs to drink and urinate more are urinary tract infections, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, cushings disease, and addisons disease. If the urinalysis was negative for infection then, hopefully, the bloodwork will help diagnose the problem. Hopefully, the bloodwork will be back in the morning. Hope she feels better soon!

The blood work sounds like what I would have done. I would be concerned for diabetes, Cushing's disease, hypothyroidism, or kidney disease. The blood work should help narrow down what's going on and may even diagnose the disease.

Good on you for talking Sophie into the vet, and it was an excellent idea that blood work was taken. This increase in drinking and urination can be caused by diabetes, kidney disease, or Cushing's diseases. The blood work should help the vet find out the cause behind her symptoms so she can be treated. I hope this helps and you don't have to wait long for the blood work results!

In an older dog, this could be caused by something like diabetes or kidney disease. Having Violet seen by a vet tomorrow is a very good idea. The vet can do a geriatric blood panel and urinalysis to check for the things I mentioned above. I hope this helps.

Hello, sorry to hear about your pup. There are several causes for increased drinking and decreased appetite. However, it may be that he is just a bit cold. Some other causes could include anxiety. Finally underlying metabolic diseases such as kidney disease, cushings, hypothyroidism, or other forms of GI disease may cause this as well. If he continues to do this then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Diagnostics may include bloodwork, an abdominal x-ray, or even an ultrasound. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Why is my dog drinking and peeing constantly with clear urine?

He will pee constantly if he’s drinking that much. He may also be losing sodium in the urine causing him to want to lick sweaty people to get additional salt. That much drinking and urine are not normal and could be a sign of kidney disease. I recommend a veterinary exam and blood work to check his kidney function and check for diabetes which also could cause these signs. Early diagnosis of a medical problem will help get him the proper treatment if needed and could prevent progesssion of the disease. Why is my dog drinking and peeing excessively after diarrhea?

If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.
