Is excessive drinking and incontinence normal after pyometra surgery?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkipoo | Female | spayed | 5 years and 9 months old | 8 lbs

My 8lb Yorkie Poodle Chanel had pyometra surgery 3 days ago and is drinking an excessive amount of water. Each time she drinks she has to urinate, she also has diarrhea which her vet says is an effect of antibiotics. Is the incontinence normal? Each day she is improving, becoming more active

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The increased drinking and urinating could result from residual infection, and irritation to the bladder during surgery. The diarrhea can be due to stress, pain, or the antibiotics.

All in all I would say that if she is eating and becoming more active, I would not panic yet. Give it a few more days. If no improvement in the urination problem in 2 days, or if worsening in any way, it’s time for a recheck with your vet.

Hi, I am concerned that Diva may have developed another problem or illness since her pyometra surgery. I would not expect her to have blood in her urine after two weeks. Its possible that she may have got a urine tract infection (uti). I'm also concerned that it sounds like she is straining to poop/ pee. This is also not normal. I'm sure the vet who performed her surgery would like to check her as soon as possible. They may suggest testing her urine and feces (poop) to check for an infection or parasites.

Yes, incontinence is definitely a possibility but there could certainly be something else going on being that she just had pyometra surgery a week ago. Maybe she is in pain and doesn't want to go outside? It is best to take her back to your vet for a follow-up and to have a urine sample checked. I would be concerned and not consider this to be normal.

Increased thirst and water consumption can be seen with a pyometra from the bacteria that are present in the uterus, but it would be a little unusual for these symptoms to continue one week after surgery. It might be a good idea to have Murlee rechecked by your vet - they might want to check blood work to make sure her kidneys are functioning okay since kidney disease can also occur secondary to a pyometra.

Why is my dog drinking and peeing excessively after diarrhea?

If she is drinking a lot of water and urinating a lot this can be a sign of an underlying disease - number one would be diabetes. Did your vet do any blood testing? If not, I suggest you have that done now. The other option, if she is not spayed, is a pyometra (uterine infection). Again, bloodwork would reveal this as she would have a very high white blood cell count. Please take her back to the vet for some blood testing.

Dog incontinence & straining after bladder surgery: Is it normal, and when will it subside?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zoey! What a rough time she has had! I think it is a good sign that there is no evidence of urine leaking in to her abdomen 4 days after the 2nd surgery! Her bladder went through a lot of trauma because of that there is inflammation. She will take longer than an average cystotomy for that to occur. I would want the straining with small urine production to improve every few days. It may take 7-14 days for the straining ti subside. I would expect similar for the incontinence. As long as she is eating, drinking and happy be patient! Good luck!

Is discharge and pooping in sleep normal 10 days after dog pyometra surgery?

Yes, the discharge can be normal 10 days after surgery. As long as she is acting normally just monitor the discharge for now. If it persists for another week then you should take her back to the vet for a follow-up. Passing small amounts of stool can also be normal. This can be due from the anesthesia and/or medications she is taking which slow down the GI tract and disrupt the normal bacterial population in the intestines. My dog leaks urine & drinks lots after spleen removal. Vet needed?

I'm happy to hear that Lill's tumor was benign. There are a couple of possibilities going on, but having a splenectomy should not result in urinary incontinence. Sometimes we will see dogs have to urinate more after surgery due to the amount of fluids that we give them during surgery, but this commonly passes after a couple of days. Since Lill is also drinking more water, I would make sure that her bloodwork was normal after surgery (as well as before). If that is the case, then I would have your vet check a urine sample. If surgery was 3 weeks ago and this is continuing, I doubt it will pass on its own, so I would take her to the vet again to investigate the problem. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Brown discharge after dog's pyometra surgery: Is it serious?

It's possible that you may need to refill your antibiotic prescription. Your doctor may be able to do this over the phone. It's possible that the original prescription or infection may have cause an imbalance in Hooka's stomach. If you notice any vomiting and diarrhea hasn't gone away over the next 24 hours, you might consider offering her a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice until it subsides.

My senior dog is peeing, not eating, and restless after surgery.

Hello. I wonder if Ruby is showing some signs for arthritis & is is pain. This would certainly cause her to be restless. Did your vet just check a voided urine sample, or was a sterile one sampled? This might give more information. We can also see urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs. Often this will respond to medications like Proin & Incurin. If she continues to not act well, the next step might be some x-rays or an ultrasound exam to see if there is something ongoing that was not apparent on the blood work.
