How to get my dog to drink water when he's vomiting and dehydrated?

Pet's info: Dog | Pug | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 6 months old | 20.9 lbs

Our 1.5 year old male pug do not drink water at all because of which he is having problems like vomiting and dehydration. It's summer and 34C. He is not eating food also suddenly. His vet says its nothing heat stress. Please suggest me what to do and how to make him drink water. He does not drink even when we mix fruit juice, milk, curdse etc. He vomits in.the mornings in empty stomach and does not eat the morning food. Please suggest what to do

First you will need to make sure that Bruno has a cool place, preferably with A/C. If he is dehydrated your veterinarian can give him fluids under the skin. Feed him some commercial tinned food available from your veterinarian or pet place and add water to it to make a soup or gruel. This will help to get fluid into him. He may have a more serious gastro-intestinal problem so if he is not eating nor drinking, take him back to your veterinary doctor or to another one for a second opinion. Do not offer him milk, or fruit juice, just plain cool fresh water to drink.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Bruno is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on medications to make him feel better. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

There is nothing specific that I would recommend doing until the vet arrives. You can offer a small amount of water but I would not give any food in case it triggers Bruno to vomit again. Keep him somewhere that is comfortably warm. Hopefully the veterinarian will be able to determine what has caused Bruno's seizure and vomiting in the next few hours.

Bruno is an adorable puppy! Puppies who are vomiting, lethargic, and not eating should be evaluated by a veterinarian. Possible causes include stomach upset from eating something they shouldn't have, parasites, or even infections like parvo (a virus they pick up in environment that causes vomiting, diarrhea). You can offer a small amount of bland food like skinless boiled chicken breast and rice, but if Bruno won't eat or continues to vomit I would have him seen by a veterinarian right away. I hope he feels better very soon!

My dog isn't drinking water after vet. How can I get him hydrated?

Sounds like Thor had a major health issue. Poor guy. You don't need to give him anything special for hydration, just keep fresh water available at all times. If Thor was given fluids at the vet's office, he just might not need the water yet. I'd recommend putting out a fresh bowl now and measuring how much water you put in with a measuring cup, and checking what's left in 24 hours to see how much he's consuming. If it seems like less than usual, call your vet with an update and ask for their advice - he might need more treatment. If at any point he seems weak, pale, or lethargic, check in with you local vet sooner. I hope Thor is feeling better soon!

My dog vomited, is restless. What should I feed him or give for gas?

Poor Bruno. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Do not give him any human medications.

My puppy ate a puppy pad, threw up, won't drink. How to get fluids?

Ideally, Timber should be physically examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER. Abdominal x-rays should be done to rule out a partial or complete obstruction. IV or subcutaneous fluids can be given to rehydrate him if necessary. If he is vomiting, do not feed him. Fast him for 8-12 hours then try a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. You can offer very small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte, no more than a tablespoon or two at a time every hour. If the vomiting persists, stop and have him checked/rechecked by your vet.

My dog is throwing up. How to tell if he's dehydrated and what to do?

In dogs, we can sometimes tell dehydration is present if we look at their gums and they seem dry or tacky instead of wet/covered in saliva. In some cases we can also see what is called "skin tenting" where if we pull up the extra skin between the shoulder blades and release it, it doesn't immediately snap back into place. These signs, however, occur with severe dehydration. If your dog was vomiting repeatedly for a day, he is likely dehydrated. He should go to the vet for an exam, fluids to rehydrate him, and an injection to help stop the vomiting. They may recommend testing (x-rays and bloodwork) to try to determine the cause of vomiting to more accurately recommend treatment.

Should I give my dog ORS if they are showing signs of dehydration?

Do you mean ORS tablets for hydration? If Bruno is dehydrated the cause needs to be addressed by a veterinarian and a specific treatment provided. My dog keeps vomiting yellow fluid even when fasting. What's wrong?

I hate to hear that Bruno is sick. While infection is possible, other causes such as an intestinal blockage or pancreatitis (to name a few) could also cause the vomiting. When pets don't respond to treatment as expected, it can mean that the real cause of the illness has not been identified. I recommend to call your veterinarian and tell them what is happening.
