My dog was sick, now won't eat or drink. Is it just the heat?

If you have a thermometer you can take her temperature to check if she is overheated. You can lubricate the thermometer with vaseline/ky jelly/ or similar lubricant and insert about an inch into the rectum. If her temperature is over 102.5 then it is high. If she is acting lethargic and not eating or drinking well then these symptoms are concerning and should be investigated by a vet. There are many possibilities for these symptoms because they are so general. The vet may be able to narrow down causes with an exam, or they may need to do bloodwork on your dog for a better idea of the cause. If her temperature is high then she could have a fever or if it is very warm in your house could be suffering from heat stroke. You have done the right thing bathing her in cool water and providing a fan but she still needs to see a vet because there can be long term consequences such as severe GI irritation and infection if a dog has suffered heat stroke.

Puppies are notorious chewers and can swolow all kind of things. Your puppy may have a foreign body in the stomach or eaten something outside that does not agree with his stomach. Additionally, vaccines are not perfect and I would not rule a viral infection. Heat stoke should not be ruled out and nor should intestinal parasites.I would advise that Ace be examined by a veterinarian shortly. Puppies can get dehydrated easily. Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

These are not normal symptoms associated with being in heat, so I would be concerned about some other illness. If she hasn't eaten in several days and is still vomiting, I would recommend taking her to the emergency vet. She is likely very dehydrated at this point, and we need to figure out what is causing the nausea.

Causes for vomiting and not eating are: viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney problems, cancer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), ate something that is stuck, toxin ingestion, new food/treat/table food or the broth. Any new food could cause an upset stomach. i would with hold water for 6 hours and food for 12 hours. If Odie continues to vomit during the fast he should see a Vet. If there is no vomiting for the first 6 hours, offer small amounts of water. If he holds down the water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals at the 12 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or continues to vomit he needs to see a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and i wish Odie the very best!

Poor Geo! Unfortunately I would not recommend doing a home remedy in this case. It's very concerning that he will not eat at all, threw up, and has trouble moving. This tells me he is very ill, and requires veterinary care. If it's very hot where you are, yes this could be due to the heat. Heat stroke is fatal without treatment, which is why he needs to see a vet. I do not recommend treating this at home at all. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.

Vomiting can be a sign of a number of different problems ranging from minor issues like eating a non-food item from the yard to more serious diseases. Sometimes after vomiting dogs can feel nauseous or weak, so I wouldn't be too concerned about Poochie not responding to his name unless he also seems disoriented or extremely lethargic. If the vomiting continues or he continues to act very abnormal you should see an emergency veterinarian. While it is probably okay to drink a little water I wouldn't encourage him to drink too much as this can sometimes trigger more vomiting.
