My dog drank hydrogen peroxide but didn't throw up. Is he safe?

I'm glad that your vet recommended that Charlie vomit up the grape that he'd eaten. The biggest challenge with grape ingestion is that there is no known "safe" amount. With this type of potential toxicity, some dogs can experience acute kidney failure after eating just one grape, while others can be perfectly fine after eating a bunch. As far as using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting, some studies have shown that there can be considerable damage and irritation to the esophagus and stomach due to hydrogen peroxide. Generally, I do not recommend using it for this reason. I understand that it's really challenging to measure and force-feed this substance, so it's really easy to give a little extra. Since Charlie has not stopped vomiting and is acting normally, odds are very good that he'll be absolutely fine. Just keep a close eye on him for changes in his overall demeanor, appetite, vomiting, hard swallowing (gulping not associated with eating or drinking), or any other concerns. If problems arise, be sure to take him to your vet, but again, odds are very much in your favor. I hope that everything goes well!

The peroxide can be very irritating to the esophagus and stomach lining. It is the main reason we do not recommend using it to induce vomiting. You can try withholding food for 12-24 hours, allowing small, frequent amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a soft, bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Start with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no dry heaving or vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to Gene's regular diet. If the dry heaving persists, have him physically examined by your veterinarian.

Toxicity from raisin ingestion is around 0.11 oz/kg of raisins. And most raisins weigh around 0.5g, making a toxic amount around 6 raisings per kg of body weight in a dog. Dolly's weight is 1.7kg. However, this is just an average. To be absolutely sure and safe, I would still consider having both pets evaluated by your local ER vet and induce vomiting if possible. Hydrogen peroxide is only one way to induce vomiting in dogs. The medicine your vet carries is more effective at inducing vomiting, but this can only be done 1-2 hrs after ingesting a toxin. There is not enough chocolate in a fun size Butterfinger to cause any toxicity issues, so I wouldn't worry :) Milo may have a mild upset stomach if he isn't used to eating "people food" like this, but otherwise he should be just fine. I would not recommend trying to induce vomiting with hydrogen peroxide in this case, as there are some risks to doing this (severe gastric irritation, possible aspiration pneumonia, etc.) and there should be no need to make him vomit.

The milk may cause some GI upset, but the raisins are a problem. There is no known safe amount of raisins for dogs to eat. There is always a possibility of kidney failure. The (major) problem with treating these guys is that you don't know if it's going to cause kidney failure until it's too late. They don't act different or ill until they are life threateningly ill. The only way to treat them is to go to the clinic, make Sora vomit if it was within an hour or maybe 2, then keep her on IV fluids for a day or two. And some dogs can eat raisins without any problems. We just don't know how each individual will react. So I know that's not the most helpful answer, but that's the more accurate one we have. You can chance it and do nothing and there is a good chance everything will be fine, or you can take her to the clinic immediately for hospitalization. Good luck!

If it has been under 2 hours since he ate the small stuffed animal, I would recommend inducing vomiting with hydrogen peroxide. You can give 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds, so if Barney weighs about 70 pounds, this would be 7 teaspoons. You can use a turkey baster to get it in his mouth. If he doesn’t vomit within 15 minutes, you can give him another 4 teaspoons and see if this works. Do not give any more than this total amount. If he still does not vomit, I recommend bringing him to a veterinarian who can use injectable medication to induce vomiting. The biggest concern with ingestion of a toy is an intestinal obstruction or blockage, which is a surgical emergency. If you cannot get him to a veterinarian now, I recommend watching for signs of obstruction including vomiting, lethargy, decreased appetite, drooling, etc. If you see these signs, he should be seen, and your vet may recommend x rays to look for evidence of an intestinal blockage. Also, monitor his feces for the next 1-3 days to look for the toy. I hope this is helpful!

Oh my, poor Max has been through a lot lately! As you know, the butter ingestion could certainly exacerbate his pancreatitis. I don't personally recommend using hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting because more recent studies have shown that it causes damage to the linings of the esophagus, stomach and intestines in nearly all dogs that receive it. I'm glad that you've stopped giving the peroxide at this point. If he isn't vomiting after 8 tablespoons, it's unlikely that it will cause him to vomit at all. Since he's received so much peroxide and is now coughing, I would recommend taking him to the vet. Your vet may want to take some chest x-rays to be sure that Max didn't aspirate (inhale) anything, that could be causing his coughing. Likewise, they may need to prescribe antacids and medication to coat his esophagus and stomach to protect him against ulceration. As far as the butter and pancreatitis situation goes, time will tell. Your vet will likely recommend continuing a low fat or bland diet for a longer period of time than he would have otherwise needed and may also extend the course of any anti-nausea medications. Since the treatment for pancreatitis is supportive, his supportive care measure may just be extended longer. I hope this helps and that Max feels better soon!
