My dog accidentally got a double dose of doxycycline. Is he okay?

Hi Dr, I gave Chiyo (my teacup pomeranian 1.5 kg) double dose of doxycycline.. I gave him third pill of 100 mg, so i assume it is about 33-35 mg.. How bad is this?

The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting.

    Although 100 mg is a little bit higher than our standard daily dose it is not that high. I am assuming that you normally give 50 mg once a day. If you've been giving 50 mg twice a day then I would just skip the evening dose and start over tomorrow. The most common side effects from doxycycline are GI related so watch for lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, or diarrhea and if noted contact your family vet. In most cases, an overdose like this may cause GI distress such as nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. It's not fatal or anything like that, so you do not need to be terrified. He should be ok. If you do see any vomiting or diarrhea, it is advisable to have him seen by a vet. If he's fine, just give him his next dose as scheduled. I hope this helps!

Is 500mg Doxycycline 3x daily too high for my dog with lupus?
Hello. I wonder if perhaps the labels were mixed up. Normally, Doxycycline would be prescribed at 5-10 mg/kg ( 136-272 mg ) every 12 - 24 hours & the niacinamide 500 mg every 8 hours. Now if your vet actually sent home tetracycline, then the dose would be 500 mg every 8 hours. But if the Doxycycline was substituted for the Tetracycline, then the total dose should be less. My dogs ate doxycycline pills. What should I do if vet is closed?
I’m assuming both dogs are about the same weight. If so the doxycycline could cause vomiting or upset stomach but there would be no other major concerns. If one of your dogs is smaller you should repost your question. Be sure to let your vet know and to get a refill so the prescription can be finished.
