My small dog accidentally took a high dose of Doxycycline. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The maximum dose of doxycycline is 10mg/kg twice daily (or 20mg/kg/day). If you gave Chylo around 33-35mg that is 20mg/kg and he should be fine. Do not give him any more for 24 hours. Doxycycline is very hard on the stomach so he may have vomiting. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Boss will be fine, there is no need to take him to the vet. Doxycycline is used in dogs fairly often. At the dose he ingested there should not be any side effects at all.

The extra dose probably caused the vomiting. Doxycycline does cause vomiting as a side effect. If the vomiting resolves, then I would not be concerned. If the vomiting persists, contact your veterinarian.

I’m assuming both dogs are about the same weight. If so the doxycycline could cause vomiting or upset stomach but there would be no other major concerns. If one of your dogs is smaller you should repost your question. Be sure to let your vet know and to get a refill so the prescription can be finished.

Hello, sorry to hear about Zoey. It truly depends on the dose your dog got. If the weights are similar then Zoey may not experience any side effects. If the weights are different, then it truly does depend on what dose in mg/kg Zoey ingested. If you think this dose is high then you could expect to see vomiting, diarrhea and a decreased appetite. This is unlikely to cause any issue but doxycycline can be quite irritant to the throat and gullet if it stays lodged without food to carry it down to the stomach. It should always be followed by eating a small amount of food or a drink as a precaution against this

Yes in two hours the tablet should have been absorbed and dissolved already. This medication must be given with food and water as well as can cause oesophageal inflammation. I would suggest to wait until next dosage and I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
