My dog took double the Cefpodoxime dose. Is she going to be okay?

I gave my dog too much Cefpodoxime 100mg medication tonight. She was suppose to take a half tablet every 12 hours, but I gave her a whole tablet.

Don' t worry about having given her a one off overdose. It is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that it's quite often used at high dosages for skin problems. If given continuously at double dosage, I would recommend to check her liver through a blood test but since it just occurred once I would not worry on this occasion.

    This antibiotic has a wide margin of safety in dogs, so in general, no serious side effects would be expected from a single "extra" dose. Charlie may have an upset stomach today (mild diarrhea or vomiting), or you may not notice any problems at all. If you have any concerns, it would be best to contact the veterinarian who prescribed the medication for him to see what he/she recommends.

    Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is unlikely to result in an issue other than causing gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, inappetence or diarrhea. If any of those symptoms are observed, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Otherwise, she is likely going to be fine. I would just not give her any more doses until 24 hours after the last dose. Good luck and have a good night!

    There are very few side effects of cefpodoxime but when given an overdose the most commonly reported side effects are vomiting, decreased appetite, and diarrhea. If these effects worsen, become severe, or continue, contact your veterinarian.

My 16lb dog accidentally ate a 500mg cephalexin pill. Is she okay?
Hi there and thank you for using Pet Coach to address your concern. At the high end of the dose of 60mg/kg for systemic infections, it would be approximately 436mg every 8 hours for that dose for a 16lb dog. A 500mg capsule will not likely cause any life threatening problems. You may see vomiting and diarrhea but this should resolve on its own. If you start to see neurological symptoms such as seizures or a wobbly gait, I would have a veterinarian examine KC. I hope this helps! My dog accidentally got too much penicillin. Will she be okay?
She will likely be ok, however she could get diarrhea since the penicillin in this 10-fold overdose likely killed every single bacterium in your dog including the good bacteria in the digestive system. Depending on whether this was a long-acting or short acting penicillin you should wait a few days and add some probiotics to her food to help reestablish a healthy intestinal flora.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question. Fenbendazole is a pretty safe medication, and you didn't give dog #1 a double dose. That dog should be fine. As for dog #2, you may see GI upset in the form of vomiting, anorexia, and/or diarrhea. If the vomiting or diarrhea is severe, you will need to take dog #2 into a vet immediately. Accidentally gave my dog a double dose of Nisamox. Is she okay?
Since Amoxicillin (the ingredient of Nisamox) has a very wide safety margin, you do not have to worry, Just keep on medicating her as prescribed, ie the next dose of 1/2 tablet tomorrow morning. No need to worry.
