Is 50mg Cefpodoxime safe for an 8 lb cat with a urinary infection?

I would not be overly concerned, although the recommended dose is 5-10mg/lb (and an 8lb cat would have consumed approx 15mg/lb) it does have a wide safety margin and overdose symptoms are very rare. I would expect some mild gastrointestinal upset and a probiotic would be helpful to reduce the impact on the natural gut balance

Don' t worry about having given her a one off overdose. It is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that it's quite often used at high dosages for skin problems. If given continuously at double dosage, I would recommend to check her liver through a blood test but since it just occurred once I would not worry on this occasion.

If she truly is 105 pounds like it says on her profile, then this should be fine as that would be actually a low dose. The use of antibiotics without a proper veterinary evaluation is not recommended as it can result in antibiotic resistance, especially if the patient is underdosed chronically. The clavaseptin will be fine as it does has a wide dose range. However, the prazosin is not an antibiotic it is a medication used in high blood pressure etc. I assume your cat has some sort if urinary issue or high blood pressure if it is on this medication? Thankfully the dose range for prazosin is 0.25mg to 1mg per cat every 8 to 12 hours so even though you gave a double dose 2 half tablets is still within range. I would go ahead and give your tablets this evening as long as the cat has seemed okay today. Try and stick to the schedule as best you can. If you are worried that your cat is sleepy/dizzy I would take him to the vet as soon as you can.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! What is your Vet trying to treat Mau for? If you are referring to Fluconazole 200mg tablets then yes that is way too much for a 2.9 pound cat. The dose is 5-10mg/kg or for adult cats 50-100mg. I would contact your Vet!

Hello. According to several Veterinary Formularies, the normal dose of Marbocyl for a 5-pound cat can range from 6 to 12 mg so you have not overdosed him. And there are no reported neurological effects of this medication which is exceptionally safe in cats. " With the exception of cartilage abnormalities in very young animals, the adverse effect profile of marbofloxacin is limited to GI distress ( vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia & soft stools ) and decreased activity." I would take your cat to another veterinarian because there is something else going on here to cause these symptoms or the infection is just not responding to this antibiotic. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Overdosing of antibiotics is usually not a huge deal. It can cause an upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea. I would monitor for these signs. I do recommend calling your local emergency clinic (or posting another question) including which antibiotic (Amoxyclav?, Doxycycline?, etc.), as this might change the answer and inducing vomiting might be recommended. Otherwise, just monitor for signs of an upset stomach and skip the next dose. Best of luck with Sumi!
