My dogs ate Cefpodoxime. Should I be worried about poisoning?

Don' t worry about having given her a one off overdose. It is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic that it's quite often used at high dosages for skin problems. If given continuously at double dosage, I would recommend to check her liver through a blood test but since it just occurred once I would not worry on this occasion.

Based on the amount Ginger ate, 200mg is around four times the maximum dose for proxetil. When a dog has an overdose of this drug, it causes vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, and bruising easily. While there have been safety studies showing the drug well-tolerated in dogs given 10 times the maximum dose, every dog does react different and it's best that she is evaluated and treated by a vet right away. I'd recommend taking her into an ER vet now for treatment to be safe. Because I can't see her in person to say for certain she will be ok, I will always recommend immediate treatment in these cases. At the high end of the dose of 60mg/kg for systemic infections, it would be approximately 436mg every 8 hours for that dose for a 16lb dog. A 500mg capsule will not likely cause any life threatening problems. You may see vomiting and diarrhea but this should resolve on its own. If you start to see neurological symptoms such as seizures or a wobbly gait, I would have a veterinarian examine KC. I hope this helps! You may see some vomiting and/or diarrhea. More serious toxicity is not a concern with a double dose of this antibiotic. Fast Milo for 24 hours then feed a bland diet in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve if necessary.

With Crosby's size and the amount he was given, you should not seen any major side effects apart from maybe vomiting / diarrhea. Oh no, that was naughty of Baxter! He took about five times the recommended dose of ampicillin. This will likely cause a reaction in the form of vomiting, drooling, and diarrhea, but more serious effects such as tremors or seizures. If you see tremors or seizures, Baxter will have to see a vet immediately. Should you see vomiting and diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

The amount of antibiotic he ingested is higher than typically used so he may experience some gastrointestinal issues but it should not be toxic. You could give him a probiotic for a few days (Proviable or Fortiflora) and monitor for any abnormal signs. If you notice anything abnormal then he should be examined by a vet for treatment.
