My 7-week-old puppy was exposed to carbon monoxide. Is she okay?

Poor babies! This is most likely due to the stress of the situation. You can take them out to get some fresh air if you are concerned about the carbon monoxide. If they were truly affected by the gas then you would also be feeling it. These detectors are SO loud to us - they are even louder to dogs. Give them some time to calm down. If they continue to be in distressed or if they are ever labored breathing then I would have your vet take a look at them. I hope this helps!

Crazy dogs! :) If they are acting okay and not coughing or walking funny then they are probably okay. I would make sure their gums are pink and not blue, purple, or white. Also watch them closely for any labored breathing. If you are worried or just unsure about how they are, it never hurts to have at least an exam done on them to make sure they are okay. I obviously cannot see them so I cannot say for sure one way or the other. I hope this helps!

If her gums and tongue turned blue (cyanosis aka cyanotic), this is a sign of not getting enough oxygen. This can come from a heart problem, a tracheal issue like tracheal collapse, a severe allergic reaction, poor pulmonary perfusion (pneumonia, cancer, fluid around the lungs, etc) and much more. I would strongly recommend to take her to the vet for an exam to see if they can figure out what caused her to be cyanotic and hopefully prevent it from happening again. Lack of oxygen can be fatal if not immediately treated. I hope this helps!

Some smoke may still linger in your room so make sure to air out the room as frequently as possible and clean all the surfaces (including walls, drapes, blinds) to help get out any residual smell/smoke. Replacing the rugs may also help. A HEPA air filter may also help a lot because it cleans the air of fine particles very well. Breathing rapidly can be a sign of dreaming but without being able to examine Ruby, it's hard to know if there is pathology. Ruby will need to be examined, started on vaccines and treated for parasites by the veterinarian and this should begin between 6-8 weeks of age. I recommend to record one of these episodes on a video. Bring up this concern to the veterinarian who will watch the video and take a good listen to Ruby's heart and lungs. Clinical signs of poisoning are dependent on the toxin involved. Microcystins can result in liver damage or failure. Signs of liver injury include vomiting, diarrhea, blood in stool or black, tarry stool, weakness, pale mucous membranes, jaundice, seizures, disorientation, coma, and shock. Death generally follows within days as a result of liver failure. Blood work changes include elevated liver enzymes, a low blood sugar, a low protein, and even abnormal clotting. These are things that your veterinarian would be able to detect. Anatoxins result in neurotoxicity evidenced by excessive secretions (e.g., salivation, lacrimation, etc.), neurologic signs (including muscle tremors, muscle rigidity, paralysis, etc.), blue discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes, and difficulty breathing. Death typically follows within minutes to hours of exposure as a result of respiratory paralysis. If Mj is not showing any of the clinical signs above, I think her risk of being in liver failure is low. However, her pale/white gums are very concerning to me, as this could indicate anemia, or a low red blood cell count. This can make dogs dangerously hypoxemic, meaning they don't have enough oxygen in their blood stream to perfuse their tissues. I would contact your veterinarian to let them know that she is having these signs, so they can determine, based on her exam and bloodwork from her previous visit, if additional intervention is necessary. Hello. Make sure the color of her gums & mucous membranes keep a nice pink color. Observe her breathing at rest & while sleeping. If her respirations are 30 breaths per minute or less while she is sleeping, & her gums remain nice & pink, for the next 24 hours, she will be fine. Pulmonary contusions alone without any other injury can take few days to recover completely. Considering the young age and if he is otherwise fine, the chances for recovery may be good. The prognosis would depend upon the full clinical assessment, so I would need more information to give you a specific advice.
