My cats breathed stove gas. Should I worry about long-term effects?

Crazy dogs! :) If they are acting okay and not coughing or walking funny then they are probably okay. I would make sure their gums are pink and not blue, purple, or white. Also watch them closely for any labored breathing. If you are worried or just unsure about how they are, it never hurts to have at least an exam done on them to make sure they are okay. I obviously cannot see them so I cannot say for sure one way or the other. I hope this helps!

If Miracle is away from the area that was painted and being kept in a well-ventilated area, I wouldn't be too concerned. Once the painted rooms have aired out some, she should be OK to go back in there. If you notice any issues such as respiratory distress, coughing, sneezing, etc, then moving her back to ventilation is best.

Clinical signs of marijuana toxicosis in cats include drooling, increased locomotor activity (e.g. wandering aimlessly, spontaneous jumping behavior), sedation, depression, anxiety, head bobbing/weaving, swaying from side to side, disorientation, vocalization, agitation, aggression, drinking excessively, difficulty swallowing, sneezing, not eating, seizures, diarrhea, and vomiting. Please monitor her carefully for the next 12-24 hours. If you notice any severe symptoms you will need to take her to your veterinarian. I cannot say how long it will be in her system as I do not know how much she inhaled. My guess would be less than 12 hours for one episode of direct inhalation but each individual animal is different in how they react (just like humans). Monitor for difficulty breathing wheezing, coughing, lethargy, drooling, loss of appetite, wobbly gait or tremors. Remove him to an area with fresh air and ventilate the affected areas for several hours before bringing him back in.

Hi there. If it was just a brief moment, they probably didn't ingest very much. I would keep a close eye on their stool, appetite and behavior and if anything changes or seems abnormal, have them checked by your vet. I hope that helps. If there were any fumes or exposure to toxins, they could have respiratory issues or irritation of the respiratory tract. You'd see evidence from trouble breathing, loud breathing, or any obstruction to airflow. But if they were outside and away from the action they should be ok as long as they couldn't ingest any harmful chemicals either. If they neurologically appear normal (normal walking, no tremors or seizures) I wouldn't worry too much. Hopefully they don't go breaking bad!

The fumes certainly could be bothering him. If you have a garage other space you can take him for a day or two while the house airs out, that would be ideal. If you don't have a space away from the fumes, call your vet or a boarding facility and ask if you can keep him there, or call a friend or family member. If you get him out of the area and make sure he's eating and drinking, its reasonable to just wait a few days before bringing him home, and he should do fine. If he goes more than 12 hours without eating or if he is acting progressively lethargic or starts vomiting, becomes unable to walk, seems increasingly disoriented, or has any seizure activity, please take him to a vet right away.
