Dog disoriented, can't walk after antibiotics. Is it kidney failure?

He should be rechecked today or be taken to an open emergency room. Metronodazole can causes vestibular signs. Other causes for young dogs to have walking problems are meningitis, tick borne diseases, granulomatous brain disease, viral infections like distemper. I would have him seen as soon as your can. Hi, I am really sorry to hear that Miko is poorly and making little progress. I am sure the vet has not lied to you, or tried to keep anything secret. It could be that Miko has two conditions at the same time or that the antibiotics are not completely effective against the condition. If you think he is getting worse and your vet is closed, I would recommend a trip to your local emergency clinic. You could get a second opinion on Miko and could get something to make him perk up. All patients as they get old, they are more fragile and can take longer to respond to treatment. If Miko should be too poorly to be helped you could have an honest conversation with the vets too, as it is not fair to make him suffer. Hope Miko can get better, and that you find the right answers to your questions.

I’m sorry to hear this is going on with your dog! A urinary tract infection can certainly make Red lethargic and not feel like himself. The trembling is probably due to her discomfort from the infection. She may also be having a flare up of her back injury as well. It’s hard to say if Red’s kidneys are involved at this point. The only way to know for sure ifnher kidneys are compromised is to run a blood test to check her renal values. This would probably be a good idea to do if you are concerned. I hope this helps. Hello, and thanks for your question about Chester. Poor guy! If he's not eating or drinking and has not improved on 2 days of antibiotics, Chester needs to go back in to the vet. At the very least he needs help staying hydrated, which is necessary to keep his kidneys and other organs functioning. Sometimes antibiotics can take several days to start making the animal feel better, but I am concerned that Chester is still feeling so crummy after 2 days of therapy. I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to better determine what's going on with his prostate enlargement. With bleeding from his penis and an enlarged prostate, I would also be most worried about a prostate infection. However, other things to consider would be a bleeding disorder (especially if there's ANY possibility that Chester may have gotten into rodent poison) or, unfortunately, cancer would be another concern at Chester's age. Hello. Your blood work should have indicated if there were any kidney problems, so if nothing was said, I would rule this out. If she did well on antibiotics, but then regressed, she may need to stay on antibiotics longer. Some dogs remain on antibiotics for 6-8 weeks. If the clavamox didn't resolve the issue, I would bring him back in for additional exams such as neurologic examination, bloodwork, x-rays, etc to try and narrow down the cause. These can help rule out metabolic or infectious issues, injuries or joint problems, or neurological disease that could be causing his symptoms. If you weren't comfortable with your current vet, seeking out a second opinion in person or getting a referral to a specialist in your area may also be beneficial.

Hello, and thanks for your question. I’m so glad Henry seems to be doing a bit better! His appetite tells you a lot about how he’s feeling so that’s an important thing to monitor. It’s certainly possible that the antibiotic shot was more effective than the vet expected - and a kidney infection would be good news, since that’s more treatable than a majority of other kidney problems. Is it at all possible that Henry could have been exposed to something toxic and the vet care helped him turn a corner? I would definitely recommend rechecking his kidney values with your vet. Rechecking those values in bloodwork will be the best way to monitor how much improvement he may have made, and this is particularly important since he improved after the antibiotic. Kidney infections sometimes require a longer course of antibiotic therapy than a single shot would provide, so your vet may advise repeating the injection, or adding oral medication, to hopefully help Henry continue to improve. They may also talk about recommendations for continued fluid therapy - fluids are so important to help keep the kidneys happy! Hope this helps and you continue to see improvement in Henry!
