Why is my senior dog still lethargic on antibiotics for infection?

If Miko's blood was not tested yesterday, I would certainly recommend having this done to see if there are any changes that are concerning on the blood work. If this is infectious, keep in mind that it may take 3-5 days for the antibiotic to start working and showing improvement. If Miko is worsening, I would suggest taking him back in to your veterinarian for a recheck exam so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! I'm very sorry you are dealing with this. At this point, you should discuss quality of life issues with your veterinarian. Friday may be able to get an antibiotic injection that, hopefully, would not cause stomach upset. If your veterinarian is unavailable due to the holiday, consider a visit to the local veterinary ER. After an exam, the vet on staff could recommend a different antibiotic or an injection.

She should be showing signs of improvement by this time if the drugs being used the correct medications for the condition being treated. But obviously something is wrong. First, you may have been giving an antibiotic that was resistant against the infectious agent or whatever is causing the disease. Second, if it is indeed a virus causing the symptoms, then an antibiotic will not be effective. Lastly, maybe the dosage needs to be increased in milligrams as well as frequency. I strongly urge you to contact your veterinarian the soonest possible to have another physical examination performed. This may be an indication that a new, or another antibiotic needs to be added to her treatment. Another option is to have her re-evaluated at a referral clinic, one that has multiple specialists. Based on your description, I would suspect as well that Sheila isn't suffering from the ear infection still, but keep in mind that I can't say this for certain without seeing her in person. She may be feeling lethargic, which is a very general sign of illness, and I would keep an eye on her for now. Should this lethargy continue over the next 48 hours, I would have Sheila seen by a vet for a health check.

It sounds that she needs to be seen by a vet as soon as possible. Your vet should be able to offer you an appointment as it does sound like an emergency. If you don't have any luck with your day practice you can always contact an emergency service that is local to you (after 6-7pm during the week) and they will see Kayla. It is hard to say what is going on with your dog without seeing her as the symptoms are not specific for one particular condition. Weakness and lethargy could be a sign of pain, fever, nausea, anaemia, kidney problems and many more.

Hello, and thanks for your question about Chester. Poor guy! If he's not eating or drinking and has not improved on 2 days of antibiotics, Chester needs to go back in to the vet. At the very least he needs help staying hydrated, which is necessary to keep his kidneys and other organs functioning. Sometimes antibiotics can take several days to start making the animal feel better, but I am concerned that Chester is still feeling so crummy after 2 days of therapy. I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to better determine what's going on with his prostate enlargement. With bleeding from his penis and an enlarged prostate, I would also be most worried about a prostate infection. However, other things to consider would be a bleeding disorder (especially if there's ANY possibility that Chester may have gotten into rodent poison) or, unfortunately, cancer would be another concern at Chester's age.
