My dog died from parvovirus. How do I cope and disinfect my home?

First off, I'm so sorry you lost Tumi to parvovirus! That is horrible for you and him, please accept my condolences. The problem with parvo is that it can live for months in the environment and home, and it's very hard to kill. I would keep your dogs from any areas where Tumi had been, and I will give you a website that details how to disinfect the home and environment. Make sure your dogs are up to date on their parvo vaccines, getting them now if they are not up to date on them. Should they show any signs of parvo, get them into your vet immediately. Im so sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting Zowie vaccinated asap. She may have been exposed but vaccination may stimulate her immune system. Parvo can live in the soil for years so if that was the case be aware that any future puppies could be at risk. Your pup may have also had intestinal parasites or another disease. I recomend Zowie getting a full check up and parasite exam as well as vaccines to be safe. Clorox will kill parvo virus on hard surfaces. So mopping tile floors or cleaning dog kennels with Clorox helps. Bleach diluted 1:9 with water is enough to kill the parvovirus. So I would mix up bleach and water yourself and then as an extra measure you follow up with the Chlorox afterwards. I would also keep all other pets away from Max if possible until he has hopefully recovered and 7-10 days after resolution of symptoms, especially not fully vaccinated pets. I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

Parvovirus (CPV) is very hardy. It is capable of surviving for months in the environment, even through the winter. Infected dogs can shed huge amounts of the virus, making it difficult to disinfect an area once it has been exposed to an infected dog. If you have parvovirus on you or your clothes you can certainly transmit it to your car or other places. Disinfectant wipes are not likely to do the trick. CPV is resistant to most household cleaning products with the exception of bleach. Cleaning with a solution of one part bleach mixed with approximately 30 parts water is an acceptable method for disinfecting any indoor area (including bedding, food/water bowls, and all surfaces). Parvo virus is transmitted from the feces/vomit of one infected dog directly to another (it can survive in the soiled environment for over 12months if not adequately cleaned and disinfected with bleach). She should be isolated from any areas where she may have contact with non-vaccinated dogs or their feces until after her second parvo vaccination but your own house (or enclosed garden) should be relatively safe as long as any accidents from your previous pup have been removed and bleached/steamed

It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.
