What cleaning products kill parvovirus from dog poop and vomit?

Since it can stay infective in the environment for many months, I would recommend not getting a young puppy for at least 6 months. If you do decide to get another dog, an older one that has been previously vaccinated or a puppy that is older than 4 months old and has already had 3 rounds of vaccines should be safe. Distemper does not last long in the environment.

Parvovirus (CPV) is very hardy. It is capable of surviving for months in the environment, even through the winter. Infected dogs can shed huge amounts of the virus, making it difficult to disinfect an area once it has been exposed to an infected dog. If you have parvovirus on you or your clothes you can certainly transmit it to your car or other places. Disinfectant wipes are not likely to do the trick. CPV is resistant to most household cleaning products with the exception of bleach. Cleaning with a solution of one part bleach mixed with approximately 30 parts water is an acceptable method for disinfecting any indoor area (including bedding, food/water bowls, and all surfaces). Im so sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting Zowie vaccinated asap. She may have been exposed but vaccination may stimulate her immune system. Parvo can live in the soil for years so if that was the case be aware that any future puppies could be at risk. Your pup may have also had intestinal parasites or another disease. I recomend Zowie getting a full check up and parasite exam as well as vaccines to be safe. Clorox will kill parvo virus on hard surfaces. So mopping tile floors or cleaning dog kennels with Clorox helps. The short answer is, "no." An adult cat is extremely unlikely to contract parvovirus from a puppy. In cats, Parvovirus is called "panleukopenia," and routinely cats are vaccinated for this as part of the FRCP (distemper) shot. The only way to difinitively kill Parvovirus is with bleach, which generally is not an acceptable answer for carpets. The good news is that the virus will no longer be infective indoors after a period of 4 weeks. Hello, and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This is a great question, and it's good that you're thinking about how to keep your animals safe. The difficulty comes from the fact that dirt and gravel are, by nature, nearly impossible to truly disinfect. We can talk about disinfecting hard (non-porous) surfaces with bleach, which is really the only disinfectant that is effective against parvovirus....but nothing will truly disinfect dirt and gravel, because you can't saturate and soak all sides of every piece of dirt & rock with the bleach solution, and parvovirus can remain in the environment for months to even years. So, with a big grain of salt to consider that it still won't be truly disinfected, but to do your diligence to try to sanitize the area as best as possible, I recommend thoroughly spraying the area with copious amounts of water first (the goal here is to dilute and wash away any remaining microscopic fecal matter). Let it dry, then I'd spray the top layer of dirt & gravel with a dilute bleach solution of 3/4 cups bleach in 1 gallon water. Also spray the barrier/walls. Allow that to dry. If possible, it may be worth buying enough gravel to add another layer on top of what's there, that you know is clean. That way, you know the surface that your pet is primarily in contact with should be safe and free of contamination. I hope this helps!

Parvo virus is transmitted from the feces/vomit of one infected dog directly to another (it can survive in the soiled environment for over 12months if not adequately cleaned and disinfected with bleach). She should be isolated from any areas where she may have contact with non-vaccinated dogs or their feces until after her second parvo vaccination but your own house (or enclosed garden) should be relatively safe as long as any accidents from your previous pup have been removed and bleached/steamed

It is unlikely that your home will have parvo in the environment. It can survive for a long time in soil, but in the home you would be looking at approximately 3 months after an infected dog had been present. You would have to buy special cleaner that is sensitive to parvo, most vets have this. Luckily nowadays parvo is quite rare, it is good that you are so concerned but dont think it is necessary to clean your shoes all the time. You could just remove them in the porch.
