Dog died from parvo. How to disinfect home to protect my other dogs?

My dog passed away due to parvo last night. What should I disinfect in order not to spread the virus into my other dogs?

First off, I'm so sorry you lost Tumi to parvovirus! That is horrible for you and him, please accept my condolences. The problem with parvo is that it can live for months in the environment and home, and it's very hard to kill. I would keep your dogs from any areas where Tumi had been, and I will give you a website that details how to disinfect the home and environment. Make sure your dogs are up to date on their parvo vaccines, getting them now if they are not up to date on them. Should they show any signs of parvo, get them into your vet immediately. Hi Jimmy. I'm very sorry your puppy died of parvo. You can contact a local vet clinic and arrange from them to cremate his remains. You will need to throw away all his toys and bedding, and completely disinfect the house. Parvo can live for months in the environment. There are vaccines to prevent a puppy from getting parvo, but it takes three series of the vaccine each given four weeks apart for the puppy to be fully protected. I would not get another young and unvaccinated puppy; rather, get an older puppy (like six months of age) who is already fully vaccinated. That puppy would be safe in your home. Best of luck.

Unvaccinated cats can get parvo from dogs, but only under very extreme circumstances. If your cats have been previously vaccinated, even though it isn't up to date, they should be fine. I would recommend getting their vaccines updated, but the biggest concern is your puppy. Parvo is highly contagious between dogs, and if your puppy's littermate has it and now your puppy is vomiting, I would be concerned your puppy has parvo as well. You need to take your puppy into a vet immediately. As for the cats, make an appointment to have their vaccines updated. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

I'm very sorry you lost your puppy! It is extremely rare for a cat to get parvo from a dog. Given that parvo can survive in the environment for six months to a year, I would disinfect your house to be safe, but Kitty should be fine. Make sure to get her vaccines.

Im so sorry for your loss. I would recommend getting Zowie vaccinated asap. She may have been exposed but vaccination may stimulate her immune system. Parvo can live in the soil for years so if that was the case be aware that any future puppies could be at risk. Your pup may have also had intestinal parasites or another disease. I recomend Zowie getting a full check up and parasite exam as well as vaccines to be safe. Clorox will kill parvo virus on hard surfaces. So mopping tile floors or cleaning dog kennels with Clorox helps. My dog died from parvo. Are my other dogs at risk of getting it?

I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. If your other dogs are adults (over 2 years old) and current on their vaccinations, it is very unlikely that they would get parvo - this is almost always a disease of unvaccinated puppies. But, if you have other puppies or young dogs in the house, especially if they are not current on vaccines, then I would be concerned that they may catch it. The virus lives in the environment for years, so I would recommend cleaning everything that your puppy came into contact with using a diluted bleach solution.

I'm so glad that Hudson has recovered from Parvo. Unfortunately, Parvovirus can survive in the environment for a prolonged period of time. Is my new vaccinated puppy safe from parvo after home disinfection?

It sounds like you've done a good job disinfecting your home - if the new pup is finished with her vaccinations, the risk should be minimal. To be safe, you could certainly try and keep her in the areas of your home where your previous puppy never spent time or used the bathroom. But from what you've said here, it seems unlikely that Kiki would get sick - the parvo vaccine is usually very effective, so most cases that I see are in unvaccinated pups.

Is Parvo a risk for adult dogs? How long do infected dogs live?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Ttorri. Parvovirus can infect an adult dog if they are not vaccinated against it or the vaccines were not effective enough to allow protection against the virus. Also, immune system problems in an adult dog or an immunocompromised adult dog could allow an infection like this to take hold. Parvoviruses vary widely in their strength or virulence so it's impossible to know how long an adult dog could survive. Some strains of the virus are very deadly and can cause death very rapidly. Again, so sorry for your loss. I wish you good luck. One last note- Parvo can last in the environment for months so I would be very cautious if getting another dog. You should clean and disinfect what you can in your home to eliminate the virus. Bleach and water is a good disinfectant. Bleach 1 part to Water 30 parts (very dilute) is enough to kill parvo.
