My dachshund has liquid diarrhea with mucus, straining. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I don't think you need to be super concerned with Diesel. I recommend starting him on a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger mixed with rice. Feed him 3 1/2 cups per day until 2 normal stools. You can also start a probiotic. I like Purina Fortiflora. If the diarrhea persists, worsens, you see blood or he starts vomiting get him looked at by your Vet. Poor Daisy. The white mucus can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine. If she has been having diarrhea for more than 24 hours, then it's time to have her seen by a vet. Should it be less than 24 hours, I can give you a home remedy for her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Poor guy. 4 days of loose stool despite a bland diet, indicates that there is something else going on underlying than just an upset stomach. Due to his age, I would suspect that either an intestinal parasite or a bacterial infection is causing this. He certainly needs to see a vet at this point to have his stool tested first, then get him treated based on what is found. I would recommend continuing the boiled chicken and rice and add in a probiotic (Culturelle over the counter works well as well as Fortiflora online). Without seeing Diesel it is hard to say. I would first make sure he is intestinal parasite free. There a several different parasites and there is not one deworming medicine that treats them all. I recommend bringing a stool sample to your vet to look at under the microscope. Otherwise the issues could be coming from his food. Make sure you are feeding a high quality puppy food like Iams, Science Diet/Hills, or Purina One. Good luck and kisses to Diesel!

Diarrhea with mucus can be due to a variety of reasons, including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, or another underlying issue. I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian, have any necessary testing done (fecal analysis, etc) and start any treatment (probiotic/antidiarrheal) that she may need to resolve it. Poor Daisy! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. Definitely keep her out of the cat box. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. These signs could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the intestine, the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic like pro-kolin can be added to the diet. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.
