Could my adopted dog's diarrhea & lethargy be from travel stress?

Stress, change of diet, parasites, etc can cause diarrhea. It can be normal for a dog that is new to the home. I would recommend giving him bland food for a couple days, such as boiled chicken and rice. If no improvement, contact your vet.

Diarrhea in dogs can have many causes, including food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Some dogs with sensitive stomachs can get diarrhea from simply changing foods suddenly or having treats. I recommend that you talk with a vet about Arrow's constantly changing stool consistency. They can rule out easy things like intestinal parasites. They may recommend a special diet or have other recommendations on feeding.

Diarrhea with blood can be due to stress, or it can be from an infection or parasites. If she’s bright and alert and eating and drinking normally this should resolve quickly. If she’s lethargic, depressed, not eating well then please take her right in for an exam and treatment. They will give medication to control the diarrhea, and may check for parasites, and blood work to check for anemia and dehydration. I recommend taking her for long walks and playing with her like you normally do so she’ll relax in the new apartment. Probably just stress colitis from the trip. I would not be overly worried. I suggest you get her a probiotic to take for a week or so - one made for dogs, not humans. You can buy it at any large pet store like Petco.

Congratulations on the new girl! This is possibly nothing but stress from all the new changes in her life. Stress colitis (diarrhea from stress) is a very real phenomenon and she may not have eaten/been drinking well in the last couple days due to the transition. If she is otherwise bright and normal looking, give it 48 hours. Try a probiotic like purina fortiflora and a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. Diarrhea can have many different causes, but given that she had exposure to a lot of dogs, it's likely related to an intestinal infection. It's a good sign if she is eating and drinking well. Diarrhea is a common problem that is usually self-limiting (will go away on its own). If Lemon has any of the following, then she should see a vet: 1) Blood in diarrhea 2) Very watery diarrhea 3) Starts acting very depressed 4) Stops eating or drinking for longer than 24 hours. 5) Diarrhea lasts longer than three days. You can help her get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/4 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. Ensure fresh, clean water is always available.
