My nervous rescue dog has diarrhea. Is a bland diet the right fix?

Stress, change of diet, parasites, etc can cause diarrhea. It can be normal for a dog that is new to the home. I would recommend giving him bland food for a couple days, such as boiled chicken and rice. If no improvement, contact your vet.

Congratulations on the new girl! This is possibly nothing but stress from all the new changes in her life. Stress colitis (diarrhea from stress) is a very real phenomenon and she may not have eaten/been drinking well in the last couple days due to the transition. If she is otherwise bright and normal looking, give it 48 hours. Try a probiotic like purina fortiflora and a bland diet (half plain boiled/canned chicken half plain cooked white rice) for a few days and I expect the diarrhea to improve after 1-3 days. (Then transition back to her regular diet slowly over 3-5 days.) If at ANY time she is lethargic, vomiting, not wanting to eat, or you have other concerns, you need to go to the vet clinic right away to make sure it’s nothing more serious. A bland diet such as a specialist intestinal diet such as hills i/d stress or boiled chicken and brown rice can be helpful - I would recommend adding a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora and also a natural calming aid such as zylkene given the recent move as stress can definitely contribute

Cheese can certainly cause diarrhea, along with stress if he was just adopted. I would stop all extra snacks and offer him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help settle his stomach, and then slowly introduce his regular food back in without any extras or treats until he is settled. If the diarrhea continues, or he shows any other signs of illness, a vet visit is best to rule out any health issues.

A sudden change in diet including switching brands can be enough to cause diarrhea in a dog. I can give you a home remedy to try for Chiquitin, and I would switch back to his normal brand of dog food. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Oh no, poor Fat Boy! You are correct that worms could be causing the diarrhea, but if he was being starved, the sudden change in diet could also be causing the diarrhea. With the deworming, he will need another deworming treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. After that, he should be dewormed every three months.

Diarrhea in dogs can have many causes, including food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. Some dogs with sensitive stomachs can get diarrhea from simply changing foods suddenly or having treats. I recommend that you talk with a vet about Arrow's constantly changing stool consistency. They can rule out easy things like intestinal parasites. They may recommend a special diet or have other recommendations on feeding.
