My dog has diarrhea since adoption. What's causing it and what to do?

Stress, change of diet, parasites, etc can cause diarrhea. It can be normal for a dog that is new to the home. I would recommend giving him bland food for a couple days, such as boiled chicken and rice. If no improvement, contact your vet.

This could be just from the stress of travel but since it has been going on for 3 days it is probably time to have her checked out. Other causes of diarrhea include intestinal parasites, viruses, GI blockages, and many metabolic diseases. An examination by your vet should help determine the cause. Dogs will frequently develop diarrhea from a diet change which is why it is recommended to slowly transition your pet from one food to another. Since worms have been ruled out, it is likely that this is your pup's issue, although there may be many reasons for diarrhea including infection, allergies and other disorders. If the diarrhea does not resolve in another day or two, you should take her back to your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhea.

Cheese can certainly cause diarrhea, along with stress if he was just adopted. I would stop all extra snacks and offer him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to help settle his stomach, and then slowly introduce his regular food back in without any extras or treats until he is settled. If the diarrhea continues, or he shows any other signs of illness, a vet visit is best to rule out any health issues.

I would recommend a diarrhea panel submitted to a reference laboratory to look for evidence an intestinal infection. This will be more detailed than testing performed at your local veterinary clinic. Next, I would recommend blood work and a urine sample to look for an underlying disease contributing to his symptoms. Diarrhea is not uncommon in puppies and there are numerous possible causes, including things like an upset GI tract due to a change in diet or stress, intestinal parasites such as worms or protozoal organisms like Giardia or Coccidia, or more serious causes such as bacterial infection or parvo virus. If Jake is having any vomiting or seems weak/lethargic we would be concerned about parvo virus and he should go to the vet right away for testing and treatment. If Jake is eating normally with no vomiting and a good energy level, he should see a vet for an exam as soon as you can get an appointment but it isn't an emergency situation, and in the meantime you can start a probiotic which you can find at many pet stores or your vet's office.
