What to feed a dog with diarrhea: chicken & rice or turkey & pumpkin?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 5 years and 3 months old | 17 lbs

Should you give a diet of turkey and pumpkin mixed 50/50 or white rice and chicken mixed 50/50 when a dog is experiencing diarrhea/loose stools? Which one is more effective? I will note my dog is not currently experiencing this but I want to be prepared what to keep on hand in the house.

Good idea to be prepared! For diarrhea I usually recommend a 50:50 mix of boiled chicken or turkey with rice or sweet potato. I tend to recommend pumpkin when stools are too hard or a dog is constipated so I wouldn't give it when a dog is having diarrhea.

It shouldn't matter if you use rice or sweet potato as both will be equally effective. Also no difference if you use ground turkey or chicken breasts.
