My dog has diarrhea after eating pumpkin. Is it serious? What to do?

I would just keep an eye on him to make sure the loose stool clears up, you may not need to change his diet to resolve it. One teaspoon of pumpkin, especially if you have been feeding it for a while, shouldn't cause sudden diarrhea, so it may be something ese that briefly upset his stomach. If his diarrhea doesn't clear up in a day or so and/or he starts feeling sick, get him in to see your vet. Sometimes diarrhea can be a symptom of constipation, as liquid can move around a plug of hard stool.

Thank you for contacting Pet Coach with your question about Dayday. This is a lot of fiber and it may cause constipation or it could cause diarrhea. If you see constipation, do not give him pumpkin puree for a few days, and add water to his dry food to get more moisture in his diet. If he does have diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Pumpkin does contain fiber, which can help with mild diarrhea some of the time. It certainly won't hurt anything to give it a try. However, if the diarrhea has been going on for more than 24 hours, I'd also schedule a vet visit for tomorrow. If Bruno seems weak, uninterested in eating, or just generally very ill, I'd recommend going to an emergency clinic tonight for evaluation.

Poor Penny. You're doing the right thing by first trying to fast her. Try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the filling) in her food once a day. If she is still having really loose stools by tomorrow, then she needs to see your vet. She may have a parasite problem or another internal illness (i.e. Pancreas, Liver disease, Gallbladder disease) that subsequently causes abnormal stools. The vet will know what to check and test for to determine the cause. I hope Penny gets better soon.

Dairy typically makes most dogs vomit and feel unwell. That being said, if Rosie has both vomiting and diarrhea, it's not recommend to treat at home. Having both of those means the dog is quite sick, and in these cases, a vet visit is always recommended. I strongly urge you to take her into a vet now.

As long as Benny isn't straining or attempting to defecate without producing stool I wouldn't worry about lack of defecation. Sometimes after diarrhea resolves things can slow down through the gastrointestinal tract and it can take several days to resume a normal frequency of defecation. Sometimes adding fiber to the diet such as canned pumpkin can help with diarrhea, but since Benny hasn't had diarrhea in the past 24 hours I would simply continue the chicken and rice and begin a gradual transition to his usual diet in a day or two. If he goes more than three days without defecating I'd recommend seeing your vet.

Vomiting has many causes including intestinal worms, inflammation, infection, dietary problems (including dietary indiscretion or eating things pets are not supposed to eat, food sensitivities/allergies), ingestion of foreign bodies or exposure to toxins, bacterial overgrowth in the gut, problems in the stomach, intestines, or even problems outside of the intestinal tract/stomach including pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, metabolic disease (diabetes,etc), endocrine diseases (thyroid or other hormone problems), etc. A thorough history and physical exam with resultant diagnostics such as fecal tests, blood tests, imaging studies such as x-rays/ultrasound can be done to try to determine what is going on. If you can't take Casper to the vet, canned pumpkin may help with diarrhea, again depending on the cause. You can feed about 1-2 tablespoons once to twice per day. When you start feeding Casper you should start with very small amounts of bland food (chicken/rice). Start with very small amounts of canned pumpkin and then work up to the recommendation above. If the vomiting returns or diarrhea persists, you will have to get Casper evaluated.
