Is ground turkey and pumpkin a safe bland diet for my puppy?

Good idea to be prepared! For diarrhea I usually recommend a 50:50 mix of boiled chicken or turkey with rice or sweet potato. I tend to recommend pumpkin when stools are too hard or a dog is constipated so I wouldn't give it when a dog is having diarrhea. It shouldn't matter if you use rice or sweet potato as both will be equally effective. Also no difference if you use ground turkey or chicken breasts. Pumpkin is great for forming stool and as part of a bland diet. I do think that it does help in a bland diet speaking from personal experience with my own pet. Typically, for a dog Smokey's size, I would recommend adding 1 tsp to each meal. I hope this helps! If the majority of your pups diet is a good quality puppy food ( at least 80% ), then you can supplement with the sweet potatoes, vegetables (?), & only a very small amount of pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so restrict this so as not to cause a loose stool. Also, make sure it is canned, or cooked pumpkin, & not pumpkin pie filling. Take care.

Yes, Turkey is generally well tolerated and tasty for dogs. As long as he doesn't eat too much (like more than his normal serve of kibble), or is known to have an intolerance to Turkey, then he should be fine. I hope that helps and have a good Thanksgiving!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. In terms of diet, a well balanced kibble is best as it will have all of the nutrients needed for a dog. If you need to make a home cooked diet, boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts with boiled rice along with added cooked vegetables is a good idea (pumpkin, carrots, broccoli, etc.). You can add in vegetables to make it more balanced. Avoid raw food and bones as they cause many dietary issues. Also, avoid onions, garlic, chocolate, grapes and raisins because these are very toxic to dogs. Best of luck with Jessi!

In a pinch, you can feed a bland diet. Mix plain white rice and boiled boneless/skinless chicken breasts in equal parts then blend it or chop finely so that Jace can eat it easily. At his size, he shouldn't need much, maybe 1/4 cup. Tomorrow, you can feed him his regular diet. One bland meal should not cause an upset stomach.
