My dog has diarrhea and threw up. What if I don't have chicken?

If you have recently switched his food or added in a new treat it could be dietary indiscretion causing this. If this were the case, I would withhold food for 12 hours and introduce a bland diet as outlined below. If, however, there has been no recent switch to his food and he has been on the same thing his whole life this is likely something else. My recommendation would be to have a veterinarian take a look at him and run some testing such as blood work to see if there are any concerning changes that need to be addressed. If you are concerned about money, then you can start the bland diet as outlined below but if the vomiting and lethargy persist for more than 24 hours I would strongly recommend he be seen by a vet. CareCredit is a good option to look into. This option will allow you to put Veterinary expenses on a line of credit specifically for that purpose and you will pay Care Credit on a monthly basis. Hello, sorry to hear about Rusty. Dietary indiscretions that lead to a decreased appetite, vomiting and even diarrhea may take up to 3-5 days to resolve. You should continue to feed a bland diet consisting or plain white rice, skinless and boneless boiled chicken, and low fat cottage cheese for 5 days to see how his GI tract responds. If the diarrhea continues, then Rusty may need anti-diarrhea medications, probiotics, and to rule out infectious parasites. Have your veterinarian examine Rusty if the he develops bloody diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or even a severely decreased appetite. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Bronco. I can give you a home remedy for him to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Friday is way too long, he must get veterinary treatment before that, he needs an anti vomiting injection this is the first thing that needs to be done as if he carries on vomiting nothing can be given to him orally. you tried the boiled chicken and rice, this is usually my first advice as well, but since it didn't do the trick, he must see a vet ASAP.

I'm sorry to hear that Gizmo has developed diarrhea on your vacation. The stress of travel can certainly do that to a dog! As long as he is otherwise normal and an adult dog, it is ok to hold food for 24hrs. Be sure to provide plenty of water for him so that he does not become dehydrated. Resting his GI tract for a period will a lot of times resolve the issue. If he is acting ill a young puppy or that doesn't work, he will need to see a local veterinarian. Transition back to the regular diet over a 1 week period. Start by adding 25% of the regular diet to 75% of the bland diet and feed that combination for 2 days. If stools continue to be firm then continue substituting the regular diet in 25% increments and feeding the combination in 2 day time intervals until the diet is 100% regular diet. Minimize treats for 1 week after moving the diet back to 100% regular diet.
