Dog has diarrhea and spot of blood, but acts normal. Is it serious?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 10 months old | 55 lbs

have a 4year old german Shepherd heeler mix. He has diarrhea but doesn’t have loss of appetite. He’s eating and drinking and playing acting like his normal self. The diarrhea just started and I took his dog food away and gave him rice and chicken. When I went to wipe his butt there was a small spot of blood. He doesn’t have bloody stool just a light small spot of blood on the wipe. I’m freaking out and I don’t know if it’s because he has something wrong or his butt is just irritated

You’re doing the right thing for the diarrhea. As far as the blood goes, he probably just has irritation around his anus or in the intestinal tract from the diarrhea. That is not uncommon in dogs and if it’s only a small amount once in a while it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. If it continues, or he develops bloody diarrhea then please take him in for an exam and treatment. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Milo.

It sounds as Milo is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an antibiotics course and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

I would take Milo into a vet immediately. His symptoms are very serious, and are a medical emergency. This is not something that can be treated at home, and if he's vomiting blood, I would worry this could be fatal without treatment. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I don't think I would be extremely concerned about one drop of blood that has happened once. As long as she is otherwise acting normally I would just monitor her for now. If the problem persists or she starts to act ill then she will need to see a vet. In the meantime I suggest you start her on a probiotic. It won't hurt anything and may help. Any probiotic made for dogs is fine. I would use it for a minimum of two weeks. This will regulate the normal bacteria in her GI tract. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Why is there bright red blood in my dog's stool if he seems fine?

Hello. That is definitely a little blood in the stool, but not enough to be overly concerned with. The first step is to have the stool examined by your veterinarian to see if he picked up some parasites, like hookworms or whipworms. If all is clear, your vet may decide to put Milo on an antibiotic, like metronidazole for a few days, but as long as he is feeling fine, & his stool remains fairly normal, this is not an emergency. My dog is pooping bright red blood. Is it serious? What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Miki! Blood in the diarrhea indicates inflammation with in the colon. It isn't uncommon for a dog with severe diarrhea or diarrhea for a few days to develop blood in the stool. The blood can cause significant dehydration so it is important to make sure he isn't very lethargic and it drinking. If the diarrhea is severe (accidents in the house, can't hold it and asking to go out often) then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours. Do not limit water. This will allow his GI tract to calm down. Then restart feeding with a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If he is very lethargic, starts vomiting and will not eat or drink he should be seen by a Vet today. Otherwise you can do the above and have him seen, if needed, by your Vet when they open. The most common cause of this is gastrointestinal infection but it also may be due to scavenging, intoxication, bleeding ulcer, low platelet count and more. Please, take Jersey to your local vets for a check. He definitely will need a few days of antibiotics but prior to this, your vet will possibly recommend a blood test or ultrasound scan to make sure there is nothing more serious going on.

My dog had bloody diarrhea with watery spots once. Should I worry?

Poor Bitsy! It certainly isn't normal to have bloody diarrhea, and it can have serious causes such as GI tumors, infected anal sacs, intestinal worms, dietary intolerance, trauma to the GI tract, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, and a foreign body among other causes. If Bitsy is acting normally, eating and drinking normally, and doesn't have any more episodes of it, it could be a one off occurrence from something she ate, and it likely doesn't require a vet visit. Should it happen again, and/or she develops other signs such as vomiting, anorexia, and lethargy, then I would have her seen by a vet right away.

My 8-year-old dog has a tiny spot of blood in his poop. What's wrong?

Blood in the poop can be from intestinal parasites, polpys or a mass, irritation of the intestines from eating bones, intestinal inflammation or from infected anal sacs. With one episode I’m not overly concerned about it as long as your dog is acting normal. If it continues I recommend a fecal test, have the anal sacs expressed, and palpate for a mass in the rectum. Some fresh blood in the stool is actually more consistent with a simple colitis (usually due to stress, excitement, new food or treats). In general, HGE is uncommon in larger breed dogs. Dogs with HGE tend to be pretty sick too: serious lethargy, loss of appetite, etc. If Elliot is eating and drinking well and has a normal attitude, HGE is extremely unlikely.
