Blood in the poop can be from intestinal parasites, polpys or a mass, irritation of the intestines from eating bones, intestinal inflammation or from infected anal sacs. With one episode I’m not overly concerned about it as long as your dog is acting normal. If it continues I recommend a fecal test, have the anal sacs expressed, and palpate for a mass in the rectum. Albert is so cute! It could be intestinal worms causing the blood in his poop. He may need another dose of the medication to kill them. It usually takes at least two deworming treatments each given two weeks apart to kill all the worms. I would also have him checked out by a vet for this to be safe. I hope this helps!

Bloody stools can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, ulcer, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. Since he has not improved on the therapies he is on I recommend that you have Cody reevaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications depending on the results. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be from straining to have a bowel movement or diarrhea. It could also be from intestinal parasites. I recommend taking a fresh stool sample to the vet so they can look for microscopic eggs. If found they can treat for the parasites and the blood. Good luck and kisses to Alfie!

Dog has diarrhea and spot of blood, but acts normal. Is it serious?

You’re doing the right thing for the diarrhea. As far as the blood goes, he probably just has irritation around his anus or in the intestinal tract from the diarrhea. That is not uncommon in dogs and if it’s only a small amount once in a while it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. What if my dog has blood in her poop but is acting normal?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I don't think I would be extremely concerned about one drop of blood that has happened once. As long as she is otherwise acting normally I would just monitor her for now. If the problem persists or she starts to act ill then she will need to see a vet. In the meantime I suggest you start her on a probiotic. It won't hurt anything and may help. Any probiotic made for dogs is fine. I would use it for a minimum of two weeks. This will regulate the normal bacteria in her GI tract. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

My 6-month puppy has runny poop and a drop of blood. Should I worry?

Thank you for contact Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Luke's runny poop could be caused by intestinal worms (if he's not up to date with his deworming treatments), or it could be a GI illness or he ate something rotten. The drop of blood in his poop could due to to irritation of the GI tract from the diarrhea. Since's his poop is normal now, just keep an eye on him for now. If you keep seeing blood in his poop or he has runny poops, I'd take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

Why is there blood on my dog's reddish-brown poop? Should I worry?

Small amounts of red to brown blood in the stool is not necessarily something to be extremely concerned about. Some simple irritating somewhere in the gastrointestinal tract could easily be the cause for such a finding. If you had said that the feces was tarry or black in color, I would be more concerned about something like a gastric ulcer, which could be caused by the Novox. As long as the bleeding isn't something that you would characterize as excessive, I would just continue to monitor for increases and perhaps bring a fecal sample into your vet for parasitic analysis. My dog has a little blood in his poop, but is acting totally normal.

Hello, thank you for you question about Lou. Since Lou is otherwise acting normal and his stool is fairly normal in consistency I would not be extremely worried about a small amount of blood. There are small blood vessels in the colon wall that can rupture and lead to blood in the feces. If a pet strains a large amount to defecate or they are experiencing inflammation in their colon wall this can lead to exposure/rupture of these blood vessels. If Lou is on any medications post-operatively or is working harder to defecate due to his recovery process that could be the reason for the blood. If the amount of blood progresses, he develops diarrhea, or becomes lethargic/inappetant I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!
