What if my dog has blood in her poop but is acting normal?

The drops of blood may be due to a little stress or inflammation in the colon. You can try a bland diet for 3-5 days to see if it helps. If not, have her seen by your vet. You should also submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to rule out intestinal parasites (worms).

You’re doing the right thing for the diarrhea. As far as the blood goes, he probably just has irritation around his anus or in the intestinal tract from the diarrhea. That is not uncommon in dogs and if it’s only a small amount once in a while it’s nothing to be overly concerned about. Luke's runny poop could be caused by intestinal worms (if he's not up to date with his deworming treatments), or it could be a GI illness or he ate something rotten. The drop of blood in his poop could due to to irritation of the GI tract from the diarrhea. Since's his poop is normal now, just keep an eye on him for now. If you keep seeing blood in his poop or he has runny poops, I'd take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for you question about Lou. Since Lou is otherwise acting normal and his stool is fairly normal in consistency I would not be extremely worried about a small amount of blood. There are small blood vessels in the colon wall that can rupture and lead to blood in the feces. If a pet strains a large amount to defecate or they are experiencing inflammation in their colon wall this can lead to exposure/rupture of these blood vessels. If Lou is on any medications post-operatively or is working harder to defecate due to his recovery process that could be the reason for the blood. If the amount of blood progresses, he develops diarrhea, or becomes lethargic/inappetant I would recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

Blood in the poop can be from intestinal parasites, polpys or a mass, irritation of the intestines from eating bones, intestinal inflammation or from infected anal sacs. With one episode I’m not overly concerned about it as long as your dog is acting normal. If it continues I recommend a fecal test, have the anal sacs expressed, and palpate for a mass in the rectum. A small amount of blood can be expected not as a result of the deworming per se but more as an effect of the worms that are likely there. If if it just a small amount of possibly blood in the stools, I would continue to monitor him for now.
